It&#8217;s all about 160 new artwork produced by over one hundred recent award-winning artists artists &#8211; and it opens at the Mall Galleries on Wednesday 16th April.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Bringing together the best emerging and established artists from art societies across the UK, the exhibition celebrates the impact of prizes and awards on their work, and their work on the world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjP0ZN0DMCn0LbiJQTQVbbFy2ChQwn2e9kI6ryn3c_DMHc3KpoLUgcx7YMWnZOrMY5wqjvXS-jvAGuQGKF8XOoOT3UHAzcynZ3-SdHcMxBEjQRjQPwvCD4QMDhnRE5roYgCZ8xmyGM1O26ORm1_AyPunJLSUNa1dNgX6gqkjiySPUFOs93PKDdc\/s720\/BEYOND%20THE%20PRIZE.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"322\" data-original-width=\"720\" height=\"286\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjP0ZN0DMCn0LbiJQTQVbbFy2ChQwn2e9kI6ryn3c_DMHc3KpoLUgcx7YMWnZOrMY5wqjvXS-jvAGuQGKF8XOoOT3UHAzcynZ3-SdHcMxBEjQRjQPwvCD4QMDhnRE5roYgCZ8xmyGM1O26ORm1_AyPunJLSUNa1dNgX6gqkjiySPUFOs93PKDdc\/w640-h286\/BEYOND%20THE%20PRIZE.jpg\" width=\"640\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>The aim of the exhibition is to provide them with a showcase for their new works and to highlight figurative art as a thriving, contemporary art form.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The artists and artwork have been guest curated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tabish-khan.com\/bio\" target=\"_blank\">Tabish Khan<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; an art critic who specialises in London&#8217;s art scene.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #1a1919; font-family: Poppins; font-size: 18px;\">He is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/londonist.com\/contributors\/tabish-khan\" style=\"font-family: Times; font-size: medium;\">visual arts editor for Londonist<\/a>, a\u00a0<span style=\"color: black; font-family: Times; font-size: medium;\">t<\/span>rustee of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artcan.org.uk\/\">ArtCan<\/a>, (a non-profit arts organisation that supports artists through profile raising activities and exhibitions)<span style=\"color: #1a1919; font-family: Poppins; font-size: 18px;\">, Discerning Eye, and is a member of The Critics\u2019 Circle.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>The exhibition is presented by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mallgalleries.org.uk\/node\/139971\">Federation of British Artists<\/a>, a collective of leading art societies based at Mall Galleries.<\/b> It is through the exhibitions and initiatives of the Federation &#8211; led by artists, for all &#8211; that more than \u00a3100,000 worth of prizes and awards, bursaries, residencies and scholarships are awarded to artists annually. Featured in this exhibition are many of these winners, plus award-winning artists from the Royal West of England Academy, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Ulster Academy of Arts, and Wales Contemporary.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span><\/i><b>The artwork is already <a href=\"https:\/\/buyart.mallgalleries.org.uk\/beyond-the-prize\/\" target=\"_blank\">available to see &#8211; and buy &#8211; online<\/a><\/b>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #1a1919; font-family: Poppins; font-size: 18px;\">The exhibition is accompanied by an online series, featuring interviews with many of the exhibitors about their journey to the prize and beyond.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Poppins;\"><span style=\"color: #1a1919; font-size: 18px;\">This includes their responses to the question: <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><p>&#8220;What impact do you think art has on the world, now, and in the future?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span><\/i><\/span>There are also a number of events &#8211; listed after the details of the exhibition below.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><h2><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\">The Artists in the Exhibition<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>The exhibition includes both emerging and established artists.\u00a0<\/b>Exhibitors are\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>award-winning artists from the annual open exhibitions of the art societies within the Federation of British Artists in 2023 and 2024,\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>plus winners of the gallery\u2019s bursaries, residencies and scholarships over the same period.<\/li>\n<li>plus award-winning artists from the Royal West of England Academy, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Ulster Academy of Arts, and Wales Contemporary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If this exhibition continues beyond this year, it provides an enormous incentive for:<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>artists to submit great artwork to FBA Exhibitions with a view to winning a prize<\/li>\n<li>a high standard of judging in relation to who wins prizes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can see the names of the artists in the online exhibition<\/p>\n<p><b>However, very oddly, <span style=\"color: red;\">none of the listings provide any reference to the prize they won<\/span>. Which I thought was the whole point of the show &#8211; to demonstrate that these are prizewinners!<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>I did ask the Mall Galleries for a copy of the list of the artists &#8211; but got an email back from the consultant who is doing their publicity saying she doesn&#8217;t monitor her email account!!!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>I think there are a few aspects which could be improved if this exhibition were to run again!<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\">Artworks in the Exhibition\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>There are 160 new artworks in the exhibition.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #3d85c6;\">Media<\/span><\/h3>\n<div>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>75 &#8211; oil or acrylic<\/li>\n<li>26 &#8211; waterbased media (watercolour, gouache, pen and ink)<\/li>\n<li>25 &#8211; mixed media<\/li>\n<li>24 &#8211; dry media (pastel, charcoal, graphite)<\/li>\n<li>6 &#8211; scultures<\/li>\n<li>4 &#8211; prints<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #3d85c6;\">Subject matter<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be interested to see how these fare in the selling stakes as I know which category tends to generate the most sales &#8211; and it isn&#8217;t Portrait and Figures.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>61 &#8211; Portrait and Figure\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>39 &#8211; Landscape and Cityscape<\/li>\n<li>23 &#8211; Still life and Interiors<\/li>\n<li>16 &#8211; Wildlife and Animals<\/li>\n<li>11 &#8211; &#8220;Other&#8221; &#8211; including\u00a0&#8220;Freemotion embroidery on painted silk&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>1 &#8211; Abstract<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #3d85c6;\">Pricing<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>It&#8217;s worth commenting on the pricing in advance. There are four approaches to pricing by different groups of artists who I would characterise as follows<\/b><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>artists who are not willing to compromise their prices and choose to make them not for sale. The exhibition represents a marketing opportunity for commissions.<\/li>\n<li>artists who have stuck to their normal price range for size and media<\/li>\n<li>artists have have been optimistic as to who this exhibition might be marketed to, one way and another &#8211; who might have got rather ambitious \/ overly optimistic in their pricing and will very probably be disappointed<\/li>\n<li>artists who have read my blog posts on pricing for exhibitions at the Mall Galleries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\">How to see the Beyond the Prize Exhibition<span><a name=\"more\"\/><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2\/>\n<ul style=\"font-size: medium; font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>Dates: 16th &#8211; 26th April 2025<\/li>\n<li>Venue: Mall Galleries<\/li>\n<li>Hours:\u00a011am to 6pm, 1pm on final day<\/li>\n<li>Admission:\u00a0Admission \u00a36, Free for Friends of Mall Galleries and under 25s.
