Timelines are essential to just about any case. I\u2019ve been
\nteased by various attorneys I\u2019ve worked with that I always recommend a
\ntimeline, and indeed it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n

But there is a method to my repeated,\u201cYou need a timeline!\u201d The
\nmovement of events across time is how jurors anchor testimony in their minds.
\nIt\u2019s how they create a \u201cstory\u201d for themselves.<\/p>\n

And the story is the single most compelling way to get facts
\nand information across to the jurors in a coherent, persuasive manner.<\/p>\n

The reason a timeline works so well, is it answers the
\nfundamental question of storytelling: \u201cAnd then what happened?\u201d It ties
\ntogether apparently disparate testimony or pieces of evidence. It grounds any
\nnarrative in logic, by assigning order to the events.<\/p>\n

Timelines need to be designed around a horizontal axis
\nrepresenting time, with \u201cflags\u201d or \u201cboxes\u201d pegged at the appropriate moments in
\ntime. Timelines don\u2019t need to be fancy, but different entities should have
\ndifferent colored \u201cflags,\u201d for example, to differentiate them easily. Beyond
\nthat, a graphics designer can help give a timeline more visual impact.<\/p>\n

The temptation is often to put too much information on a
\ntimeline: it\u2019s a tool meant to emphasize and support, not reiterate all the
\ntestimony. Several uncluttered, easy-to-read timelines are better than one
