The plant, a major employer in the river town, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leadertelegram.com\/news\/front-page\/the-day-our-town-changed-25-years-after-uniroyal-closing\/article_53efe90c-4633-5b0e-bd68-57edb3d8ecf3.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (closed)\">closed<\/a> in June 1992, putting more than 1,000 people out of work and shaking one of the city\u2019s economic bedrocks. The reverberations of that event echo to this day.<\/p>\n<p>When Miller was approached by two local documentary filmmakers asking to share his story, he said yes. The film, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.firesideproductionsllc.com\/when-rubber-hit-the-road-1\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (When Rubber Hit the Road)\">When Rubber Hit the Road<\/a>,\u201d released in February, was backed by Wisconsin Humanities, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that works to \u201cbuild connections and understanding among people of all backgrounds and beliefs\u201d through educational and cultural programs.<\/p>\n<p>For more than fifty years, Wisconsin Humanities, formerly the Wisconsin Humanities Council, has helped people in Wisconsin to remember our shared history and culture and build the bridges to help us understand who we are, where we\u2019ve been, and where we might go together. The group\u2019s eight-person staff serves every Congressional district in the state through grants and programming partnerships with communities, libraries, historical societies, museums, and other nonprofits.<\/p>\n<p>Now that mission is in grave jeopardy, due to the Trump Administration\u2019s assault on its chief funder, the National Endowment for the Humanities. On April 2, in the middle of the night, Wisconsin Humanities executive director Dena Wortzel got word that all federal funding had evaporated, effective immediately. Federal funding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/news\/wisconsin-humanities-funding-peril-trump-cuts\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (accounts for)\">accounts for<\/a> 89 percent of Wisconsin Humanities\u2019 annual budget of roughly $1.2 million. The rest comes from the state and private donations.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Congress allocated current-year funds in mid-March, the termination letter that Wortzel received states that its grant is eliminated in its entirety. That grant includes $400,000 for fiscal year 2024 that will no longer reach Wisconsin communities, unless Congress acts to reverse the order.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What will the end of Wisconsin Humanities mean?<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the group <a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsinhumanities.org\/wh50\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (funded)\">funded<\/a> 220 grant-related events with more than 80,000 participants. One recent grant went to the Headwaters Council for the Performing Arts in Eagle River, Wisconsin, to fund a single performance based on the songs from World War II. This mushroomed into collaborations with multiple community organizations, including library exhibits, veterans\u2019 writings, and art pieces.<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin Humanities also helped sponsor a community powered project in Spooner, Wisconsin, to help local community leaders to identify ways to support teens. Projects have included a community clean-up initiative, a park repair, and a collaboration between teens and community leaders to repurpose a building for a youth center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wouldn\u2019t have come up with it on our own,\u201d said Angela Bodzislaw, a local librarian involved in this undertaking, \u201cbecause we wouldn\u2019t have had the time (or skills) to do it.\u201d The program is now in its third year and self-sustaining.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its own programs, Wisconsin Humanities provides financial support for related programming across the state. It partners with Wisconsin Public Radio and its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsinlife.org\/about-wisconsin-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (Wisconsin Life)\">Wisconsin Life<\/a>,\u201d radio program, airing radio essays that celebrate what makes Wisconsin unique, with <a href=\"https:\/\/captimes.com\/news\/business\/number-of-wpr-listeners-pbs-wisconsin-viewers-shrinking\/article_552034da-d393-11ef-ad3d-2b0b69b7e6e4.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (approximately)\">approximately<\/a> 340,000 listeners each week.<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin Humanities also supports the Wisconsin Poet Laureate Commission and the Wisconsin poet laureate. Wisconsin historian and author Jerry Apps, who\u2019s worked with the group on a variety of projects, explained why it matters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad used to say, \u2018There\u2019s a tremendous difference between having information and knowing something,\u2019\u201d Apps said. \u201cHumanities get to the \u2018know.\u2019 \u2018Knowing\u2019 gets to the depths of who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If the humanities teach us anything, it is the power of what we can do together.
