visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cCharted: The S&amp;P 500\u2019s Trump-Driven Tariff Turbulence\u201d \u2014 Visual Capitalist\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/charted-the-sp-500s-trump-driven-tariff-turbulence\/embed\/#?secret=jG3kdSwAeM#?secret=ggzwWHgXB7\" data-secret=\"ggzwWHgXB7\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Given the market turbulence, sage words from one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/personal-finance\/article-ive-experienced-every-single-smackdown-in-the-market-for-over-50-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Globe and Mail\u00a0<\/em>article I read this week (subscription via Carrick on Money)<\/a>\u00a0which was the inspiration for this headline:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve experienced every single smackdown in the market for over fifty years,\u201d Doug Hartt told me by e-mail recently. \u201cAt some point in each market meltdown, my portfolio has dropped equal to the relevant indexes. It\u2019s always come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cTake heart from Mr. Hartt. The market does always come back over time. Declines like we\u2019re seeing right now are hard to watch, but they do build your investing calluses.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed.<\/p>\n<p><em>So staying the investing course is usually a good idea as tough as that may be.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When we look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/awealthofcommonsense.com\/2025\/04\/how-bad-could-this-get\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S&amp;P 500 corrections over the last 80+ investing years<\/a> it looks like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"OYllMYpwS5\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/awealthofcommonsense.com\/2025\/04\/how-bad-could-this-get\/\">How Bad Could This Get?<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cHow Bad Could This Get?\u201d \u2014 A Wealth of Common Sense\" data-src=\"https:\/\/awealthofcommonsense.com\/2025\/04\/how-bad-could-this-get\/embed\/#?secret=dUSvvvqX1d#?secret=OYllMYpwS5\" data-secret=\"OYllMYpwS5\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: with thanks to Ben Carlson, A Wealth of Common Sense.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I remind myself of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/how-long-do-stock-market-corrections-last\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this graphic as well when it comes to corrections<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capitalgroup.com\/content\/dam\/cgc\/tenants\/canada\/images\/content\/chart-market-corrections-frequent-916x400.png\" alt=\"Standard &amp; Poor's 500 Composite Index (1948-2017)\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capitalgroup.com\/content\/dam\/cgc\/tenants\/canada\/images\/content\/chart-market-corrections-frequent-916x400.png\" alt=\"Standard &amp; Poor's 500 Composite Index (1948-2017)\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>So, our plan is to be ready for this at all times: given a stock market correction happens at least once every two years, of 10% or more declines, keep cash\/cash equivalents ready \u2013 always.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I don\u2019t know if any tariffs are here to stay.
