[On April 10th<\/sup>,
\n1925<\/a>, F. Scott Fitzgerald\u2019s novel The Great Gatsby<\/i> was published
\nby Charles Scribner\u2019s Sons<\/a>. While I have my
\nproblems with Gatsby<\/i><\/a>, it remains one of our most influential and
\nimportant novels, and one that opens up so many AmericanStudies contexts. So
\nthis week I\u2019ve highlighted a handful of them, leading up to this weekend post
\nfeaturing fellow GatsbyStudiers!]<\/p>\n

Four great
\npublic scholarly takes on Fitzgerald\u2019s novel, and a request for more!<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Matthew
\nTeutsch<\/span><\/a>: My friend and online collaborator Matthew has written about
\nFitzgerald\u2019s novel multiple times, but I particularly enjoyed the chance to
\nread this multi-part account (part two is linked at the bottom) of his
\nexcellent Fulbright lecture on the book (and not because he engages so
\nthoughtfully with my own takes, although I sure do appreciate that). <\/span><\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Stephanie
\nPowell Watts<\/span><\/a>: In that lecture Matthew also engages with Watts\u2019s take on the
\nbook in this LitHub piece, which remains one of the single most thoughtful intersections
\nof autobiography and analysis I\u2019ve ever encountered. A must-read! <\/span><\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Wesley
\nMorris<\/span><\/a>: Morris\u2019s intro to the 2021 Modern Library edition of the novel,
\nreprinted by The Paris Review<\/i> at that hyperlink, is also a must-read
\n(honestly all four of these pieces are for anyone who wants to engage with
\nFitzgerald\u2019s novel beyond its own stunning prose). I particularly like that he
\ndoesn\u2019t take for granted our reading of the book\u2014yes, it\u2019s often assigned by
\nteachers, including me, but we should still think long and hard about why we
\nread it, as Morris models so thoughtfully here.<\/span><\/p>\n

4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Jillian Cantor<\/span><\/a>: I tried
\nto engage with Daisy Buchanan a lot and Myrtle Wilson a bit in my earlier posts
\nthis week, but there\u2019s still much more to say about women in Fitzgerald\u2019s
\nnovel, and Cantor\u2019s LitHub piece says a great deal very powerfully. <\/span><\/p>\n
