If you\u2019re new to the game, you might be thinking one of two things:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">More is more = you can never have enough charcoal, so just light up as much as you can!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Light a few pieces because charcoal can get damn expensive, and pray to the BBQ gods it will be enough to finish the whole cook.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b>The right way to measure charcoal for your BBQ<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">While it would be convenient to have a formula, the reality is that many variables can affect your cook so it\u2019s quite tricky to pinpoint exactly how much charcoal you\u2019ll need. Factors like the type of fuel, cooking method, equipment and the temperature of your grill should all be considered. But don\u2019t fret \u2013 thanks to extensive testing of our Firebrand BBQ fuel over the years, we\u2019ve found a solution that can lead to the perfect cook every time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Quick tip 1: Use the 1:1 method.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">A good rule of thumb is that the ratio of BBQ charcoal to meat should be equal. This means that for every kilogram of meat, you should use a kilogram of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/firebrandbbq.com.au\/product\/premium-briquette-bbq-charcoal-3kg-pack\/\"><b>Firebrand Premium Briquette BBQ Charcoal<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">for your grill. That\u2019s because the volume ratio of charcoal briquette to lump is about 1:1.5 kg. When it comes to heat output and burn time, you\u2019d need 1 and \u00bd amounts of lump charcoal to get the equivalent performance from briquettes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy-load aligncenter size-full wp-image-432079\" src=\"https:\/\/firebrandbbq.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/28695010_10213531707861766_750339010_o-225x300-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">In one of our cooks, we loaded two <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/firebrandbbq.com.au\/product\/firebrand-fire-it-up-charcoal-starter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Firebrand Chimneys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (or charcoal starter) with approximately 4kgs of Firebrand Rotisserie Grade Briquettes each. We were able to grill these two skewers of meat with a total weight of 8kg for 4 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy-load aligncenter size-full wp-image-432080\" src=\"https:\/\/firebrandbbq.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/28555439_10213531744222675_1304070136_o-300x225-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"\/><\/p>\n<h2><b>Quick tip 2: Mind the heat.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">While the 1:1 method is a good rule of thumb, you should also remember that too little charcoal could mean your grill won\u2019t get hot enough, while too much charcoal might make it too hot. Of course, this still depends on the quality of fuel you use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">When doing low \u2018n slow cooking in a smoker like the Kamado, an offset smoker or even kettle BBQs (with lid on), you can expect double burn time compared to open grilling applications. This means lump charcoal can burn between 4 to 6 hours while briquettes can give you between 8 to 10 hours.
