If a business makes a good product sold at a fair price, it makes a profit. If it sells an inferior product or charges more than competitors, buyers turn away. Businesses must be responsive to consumer demands.<\/p>\n<p>A democratic political system operates similarly. In this case voters act as consumers, providing positive or negative feedback to politicians, who adjust their conduct accordingly. But today, voters are not getting the information they need to make informed choices.<\/p>\n<p>Having worked for the federal government under both Republican and Democratic presidents, I\u2019ve had a front-row seat to policy swings between administrations. This time, what\u2019s happening is different: The Trump Administration is using a wide range of tools to block, limit, or distort the flow of information that would otherwise serve as feedback to voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The administration has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/31\/health\/cdc-websites-gender-lgbtq-datasets\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (shuttered)\">shuttered<\/a> multiple government information websites, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/02\/upshot\/trump-government-websites-missing-pages.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (disease outbreak tracker)\">disease outbreak tracker<\/a>. It <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-ap-journalism-first-amendment-8a83d8b506053249598e807f8e91e1ae\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (barred)\">barred<\/a> the Associated Press from the White House press room for not recognizing the \u201cGulf of America.\u201d Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/pentagon-removes-major-media-outlets-nbc-news-dedicated-workstations-p-rcna190276\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (expelled)\">expelled<\/a> legacy media, including NBC News, <em>The New York Times<\/em>, National Public Radio, and Politico, from the Pentagon press room in favor of primarily conservative outlets. Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/white-house\/trump-fires-multiple-inspectors-general-legally-murky-overnight-move-rcna189261\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (fired)\">fired<\/a> eighteen inspectors general, who served as independent watchdogs that uncover waste, fraud, and abuse at federal agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has deployed lawsuits and regulatory actions against media entities that sometimes report unfavorable news, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/donald-trumps-lawsuits-against-media-companies-2024-12-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (suing)\">suing<\/a> ABC, CBS owner Paramount, <em>The Des Moines Register<\/em>, and the Pulitzer Prize Board for honoring journalists covering Trump\u2019s 2016 campaign. Trump previously sued Facebook parent <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-meta-settlement-zuckerberg-capitol-riot-9939e52679364080c983e0cab739b805\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (Meta)\">Meta<\/a> for blocking him after the Capitol riot and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tylerroush\/2023\/07\/29\/trump-loses-475-million-suit-against-cnn-latest-defeat-in-multiple-media-faceoffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (CNN)\">CNN<\/a> for defamation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In February, Brendan Carr, head of the Federal Communications Commission, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/media\/2025\/02\/13\/fcc-brendan-carr-nbc-cbs-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (announced)\">announced<\/a> investigations of NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, NPR, and KCBS radio over what he claims is biased content. Elon Musk is <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/elon-musk-media-matters-lawsuit-advertising-neonazi-1fe499daa600f513af27ffa68d2e8b91\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (suing)\">suing<\/a> Media Matters for America, a nonprofit that tracks extremism in the media. For both Trump and Musk, the goal is not necessarily to win cases, but to hobble and intimidate independent news sources.<\/p>\n<p>When President Trump speaks, he is often untruthful, and it is the media\u2019s job to point that out. But Trump wants to impede that function as much as possible. Early in Trump\u2019s first term, adviser Kellyanne Conway <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-fix\/wp\/2017\/01\/22\/kellyanne-conway-says-donald-trumps-team-has-alternate-facts-which-pretty-much-says-it-all\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (coined)\">coined<\/a> the phrase \u201calternative facts\u201d regarding situations that called for falsehoods. <em>The Washington Post<\/em>\u2019s fact-checker team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2021\/01\/24\/trumps-false-or-misleading-claims-total-30573-over-four-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (documented)\">documented<\/a> more than 30,000 false or misleading claims made by Trump during that term.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This time around, Trump is demanding loyalty on key untruths. Candidates for national security positions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2025\/02\/10\/trump-war-on-reality-democracy-media-musk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (must say)\">must say<\/a> \u201cyes\u201d when asked whether the 2020 election was stolen. Vice President J.D. Vance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mollybohannon\/2024\/09\/15\/vance-defends-false-claims-about-immigrants-eating-cats-wanted-to-create-media-attention\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (complained)\">complained<\/a> about fact-checking during the vice-presidential debate when he falsely claimed that Haitian immigrants were eating neighbors\u2019 pets. He justified this falsehood as a way to bring attention to the border issue.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Trump and Musk are using their bully pulpits on social media to disparage disfavored outlets. Musk falsely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2025\/02\/15\/musk-doge-deception-reuters\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (accused)\">accused<\/a> Reuters news service of \u201csocial deception\u201d after it reported that his federal government cuts are based more on political ideology than cost savings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the face of criticism and financial pressures some embattled media companies, including <em>The Washington Post<\/em> and the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>, preemptively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2024\/oct\/25\/news-election-endorsements-washington-post-la-times\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (capitulated)\">capitulated<\/a> by withholding endorsements of Kamala Harris. Meanwhile, ABC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/14\/politics\/trump-abc-news-defamation-lawsuit-settle\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (agreed to pay)\">agreed to pay<\/a> $15 million to settle a defamation suit they would likely have won. And social media platforms like Facebook and X have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/01\/07\/business\/meta-fact-checking\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (pulled back)\">pulled back<\/a> on fact-checking initiatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Autocratic politicians depend on their ability to lie without facing accountability. Elections based on disinformation may not reflect true voter preferences. Thus, it is not just important but patriotic to use fact-checking websites to verify claims, avoid relying on one type of media, and learn how to recognize misinformation. Voters can also financially support groups that conduct investigative journalism or advocate for press freedom.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For their part, media company owners must recognize that preemptive capitulation to nuisance lawsuits and bully pulpit harassment encourages such behavior.
