Though I did photograph the Boston busing crisis \u2013 when the state\u2019s schools were under court control to desegregate through a process of busing students \u2013 in 1975 I ended up taking somewhat alienated photographs of the American social landscape. Ultimately, I felt I needed to leave the US to find my way of seeing as a photographer.<\/p>\n<p>Now, after three decades of photographing predominantly in the Caribbean, Latin America, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/topic\/turkey\">Turkey<\/a>, and other places outside the US, perhaps I\u2019m finally ready to photograph my own complex country. That it is a nation of immigrants.\u201d<\/p>\n<footer>Alex Webb<\/footer>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s why I\u2019m currently working on a book about Brooklyn \u2014 in collaboration with photographer Rebecca Norris Webb, my wife and creative partner \u2014 the borough we\u2019ve called home for some 20 years. I\u2019ve been particularly drawn to its cultural and ethnic richness and variety. In many ways, the borough epitomises one of the things I\u2019ve long admired about the US: that it is a nation of immigrants. In this sense, Brooklyn is a kind of antidote to the increasingly disturbing anti-immigrant sentiment of the current administration. Some historians say one out of eight of all American families has had a relative that lived in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div>\n                                    <\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI hope that in these particular neighbourhoods, where many artists live, I might discover moments that resonate with notions of nonconformity and creativity<\/p>\n<footer>Alex Webb<\/footer>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.huckmag.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tcocdn.com%2Ftco%2Fimages%2FHuck%2Fwea2018017g007-2560x1710-copy-2.jpeg&amp;width=600&amp;focalX=0.5&amp;focalY=0.5&amp;quality=75&amp;cb=8ef14651\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.huckmag.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tcocdn.com%2Ftco%2Fimages%2FHuck%2Fcompilation_08-2560x958.jpeg&amp;width=600&amp;focalX=0.5&amp;focalY=0.5&amp;quality=75&amp;cb=cb36f3d7\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<p>I never know what I\u2019m going to find when I walk the streets of Brooklyn, but I hope that in these particular neighbourhoods, where many young artists live, I might discover moments that resonate with notions of nonconformity and creativity.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m certainly more optimistic about New York than other parts of the country. New York seems like a haven from the radically reactionary politics of the current US administration. Apparently, over <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7ny.com\/politics\/how-each-nyc-borough-voted-(hint-clinton-didnt-win-them-all)\/1598306\/\">80 per cent<\/a> of Manhattan dwellers voted against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/topic\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com.au\/michael-bloomberg-donald-trump-new-yorker-hypocrisy-2016-7\">Michael Bloomberg<\/a>, the former mayor of New York, said of Trump: \u201cI\u2019m a New Yorker and I know a con when I see one.\u201d That notion certainly endears me to our city.<\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.huckmag.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tcocdn.com%2Ftco%2Fimages%2FHuck%2Fwea2018017g018-2560x1710.jpeg&amp;width=600&amp;focalX=0.5&amp;focalY=0.5&amp;quality=75&amp;cb=067aec96\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<p>I don\u2019t believe in photographs that \u2018sum up\u2019 an idea. I like photographs that embrace complexity and contain several ideas \u2013 perhaps even conflicting ones. Perhaps that\u2019s why I\u2019ve long been attracted to photographing cities. I appreciate photographs that are a little ambiguous, enigmatic, or mysterious. If one can simply boil down a photograph to an idea, why take the photograph? <\/p>\n<p>What advice would I give to young photographers? Follow your passions, your obsessions. Channel the unconscious urges that drive your vision, rather than trying to please others. The rewards of a career in photography are fleeting and unpredictable at best \u2013 so spend your time concentrating on what you believe in. Most importantly, be true to yourself, to your beliefs, and to your way of seeing.
