Long before shipping lanes crossed the Taiwan Strait, and long before Taiwan was an island at all, an archaic human jawbone settled into the mud of the ancient seabed. There it rested for tens of thousands of years \u2014 until a fishing net hauled it back into daylight.<\/p>\n

An analysis of proteins in this jaw, found by fishermen off Taiwan\u2019s coast, indicate that the fossil comes from a Stone Age population called Denisovans. Yousuke Kaifu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

Today, that jawbone, known as <\/span>Penghu 1<\/span><\/em>, is reshaping ideas about the Denisovans, a shadowy population of archaic humans whose genetic echoes still linger in modern people across Asia and Oceania.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cPenghu 1 shows Denisovans were not just mountain specialists or cold-adapted northerners,\u201d<\/em> said Takumi Tsutaya, a biological anthropologist and lead author of the new study. <\/span>\u201cThey lived across a much wider range than anyone expected.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Denisovans have always been strange occupants of the human family tree. They were first identified not from their faces or skeletons, but from their DNA \u2014 extracted from a finger bone and a few teeth found in Siberia\u2019s Denisova Cave.<\/p>\n

It was only later that a few scattered fossils from Tibet and China hinted at what Denisovans might have looked like. Thick-boned jaws. Massive molars. A distinctive anatomy built for endurance.<\/p>\n

But until now, the Denisovans seemed a population defined by the mountains and cold \u2014 known from Siberia and the Tibetan Plateau.<\/p>\n

Then came <\/span>Penghu 1<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pulled from a fishing net and eventually donated to Taiwan\u2019s National Museum of Natural Science, the <\/span>Penghu 1<\/em> jaw retained no usable DNA. But researchers turned to another molecular witness: ancient proteins.<\/span><\/p>\n

From the tooth enamel of the jaw, scientists extracted over 4,200 protein fragments. Two of those fragments carried distinctive Denisovan signatures \u2014 chemical variants rarely seen in humans or Neanderthals.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cRetrieving this kind of molecular evidence from a fossil recovered from the sea floor \u2014 that would have been impossible even a decade ago,\u201d<\/em> noted Sheela Athreya, a paleoanthropologist not involved in the research.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Alongside the molecular evidence, the physical features of <\/span>Penghu 1<\/em> add to the story. The jaw\u2019s robust structure and the shape of its tooth roots closely resemble a Denisovan jaw from Xiahe, China, discovered high on the Tibetan Plateau.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Taiwan is 4,000 kilometers from Denisova Cave. Its climate could hardly be more different.<\/p>\n

Tsutaya and his colleagues suggest that Denisovans were astonishingly adaptable \u2014 capable of thriving in the cold of Siberia, the thin air of Tibet, and the humid lowlands of what is now Taiwan.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a level of ecological flexibility we don\u2019t often credit archaic humans with having,\u201d<\/em> Tsutaya said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The fossil defies easy dating. Seawater had long since stripped away its collagen, eliminating possibilities for radiocarbon analysis.<\/p>\n

Still, the geography offers clues. During Ice Age glacial periods, sea levels dropped, and Taiwan was connected to mainland Asia. The researchers suggest <\/span>Penghu 1<\/em> likely dates to either 70,000\u201310,000 years ago, or perhaps an earlier window between 190,000 and 130,000 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

That range overlaps with the known Denisovan timeline \u2014 but also leaves room for other possibilities.<\/p>\n

The question of who exactly the Denisovans were remains unsettled. Some researchers, including paleoanthropologist Xiujie Wu, propose that fossils like <\/span>Penghu 1<\/em> belong to a distinct species: <\/span>Homo juluensis<\/em>. But others urge caution.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUntil we know who the fossils called Denisovans were, we can\u2019t know their fate or their relationship to Homo sapiens,\u201d<\/em> Athreya cautioned.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

For now, <\/span>Penghu 1<\/em> joins a small but growing collection of Denisovan fossils stretching across Asia \u2014 from Tibet to Taiwan, from Siberia to the South China Sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

If Denisovans were as widespread and ecologically versatile as this latest find suggests, the story of human evolution in Asia may be due for a rewrite.<\/p>\n
