ABC Nightlife – tariffs, superannuation, and gold

I joined Philip Clark on ABC Nightlife to unpack the recent market volatility, sparked by Donald Trump’s latest tariff announcements – and what’s next for equities, interest rates, and global markets.

In the segment we delve into the motivations behind the tariffs, examining the U.S. government’s push to bring manufacturing – and with it, ownership over Intellectual Property (IP), and patents – back home. Trump’s strategy appears to favour tariffs over sanctions in an attempt to break up trade blocs that exclude the U.S. However, with uncertainty surrounding the permanency or severity of these tariffs, it is fuelling market turbulence.

We also look at how these shifts are impacting superannuation. With superannuation being tied to markets and a potential recession looming, many are concerned for their retirement. So, what should you be thinking about when planning your financial future?

And of course, we couldn’t ignore gold. Prices are still surging – but is this just a fear-driven bet? If so, is it a smart investment?

Tune in from 4:33 – 54:20 to listen to the full segment on ABC Nightlife.

Roger Montgomery is the Founder and Chairman of Montgomery Investment Management.
