It was almost as if my small feet were suddenly too big. Then my symptoms took a darker turn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t see!\u201d I gasped one frigid January morning in 1997. Beside me, my boyfriend asked, \u201cWhat do you mean you can\u2019t see?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t catch enough breath to speak normally. My left eye hurt, and I could only see a kind of darkness that I had never seen before. It was like an abyss. My voice was too loud, too quick, too high. I was disoriented.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ophthalmologist conducted all sorts of tests. I spent what seemed like hours looking into these big white machines that watch your eyes as you follow dots, lines, colors, and movement.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the doctor pronounced, \u201cYou have optic neuritis. The optic nerve in your brain is inflamed. That\u2019s why you can\u2019t see out of it. Your immune system perceives your optic nerve cells as invading cells that need to be attacked, and the attack is causing inflammation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next thing he told me was even scarier: \u201cThis is a common first presentation of multiple sclerosis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I recovered my eyesight after about a month and a half, but my course had been set. I had MS. I was just thirty-two years old. A decade later, I began to lose my mobility. Today, I use a mobility scooter to get around.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My commute to work became unmanageable. But because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (Americans with Disabilities Act,)\">Americans with Disabilities Act,<\/a> my employer offered me reasonable accommodation to work from home. It\u2019s only because of that accommodation that I\u2019m not unemployed and perhaps even institutionalized.<\/p>\n<p>But now, fear among people with disabilities is escalating as President Donald Trump and his unelected co-president Elon Musk are on the warpath against accessibility. Through an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/ending-radical-and-wasteful-government-dei-programs-and-preferencing\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (executive order)\">executive order<\/a> issued on his first day in office, Trump took aim not just at DEI\u2014diversity, equity, and inclusion\u2014but DEIA, with the \u201cA\u201d standing for accessibility.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/ag\/media\/1388501\/dl?inline\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (vowed)\">vowed<\/a> to go after programs with federal funding that promote accessibility and equity in the workplace and schools. Republicans are proposing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckershospitalreview.com\/finance\/where-medicaid-cuts-would-hit-hardest-through-2034-a-state-by-state-breakdown.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (slash)\">slash<\/a> $880 billion from Medicaid, a program on which more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicaid.gov\/about-us\/program-history\/medicaid-50th-anniversary\/entry\/47691#:~:text=More%20than%2010%20million%20children,dental%2C%20vision%20and%20hearing%20services.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (ten million)\">ten million<\/a> adults and children with disabilities rely. And lawmakers want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicaid\/issue-brief\/medicaid-work-requirements-current-waiver-and-legislative-activity\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (condition)\">condition<\/a> health care on meeting stringent work requirements.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s some kind of catch-twenty-two\u2014force people with disabilities to work so that they can live, but ensure their workplaces aren\u2019t accessible to them. Pointedly, the federal government is among the nation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/01\/24\/dei-orders-disabled-workers-telework\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (largest employers)\">largest employers<\/a> of disabled people\u2014and their work-from-home options, often along with their jobs themselves, are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/01\/24\/dei-orders-disabled-workers-telework\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (disappearing)\">disappearing<\/a> under Trump. Devastating cuts to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/education-department-layoffs-students-disabilities-rcna196114\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window ( Departments of Education)\"> Departments of Education<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/s\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (Health and Human Services)\">Health and Human Services<\/a> will further gut programs on which people with disabilities depend.<\/p>\n<p>This is terrifying for people living with disabilities today, but it should be worrying for all of us.<\/p>\n<p>Whether through genetics, illness, accident, or age, nearly all of us will experience some kind of disability in our lives. Disability rights advocates worked hard to achieve the protections we do have under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.gov\/resources\/disability-rights-guide\/#:~:text=The%20ADA%20prohibits%20discrimination%20on,to%20the%20United%20States%20Congress.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (Americans with Disabilities Act)\">Americans with Disabilities Act<\/a>, signed into law by Republican President George H.W. Bush. Now that law\u2019s protections are tumbling down.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m one of the lucky ones, able and allowed to work at home. But a new <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpartnership.org\/workers-with-disabilities-continue-to-benefit-from-expanded-workplace-flexibility-but-are-suffering-from-trumps-attacks\/?utm_source=listserv&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ej_disabilityemployment\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (study)\">study<\/a> from the National Partnership of Women and Families found that in 2024, disabled people were nearly twice as likely to be unemployed as non-disabled people, with Black and Latinx people with disabilities experiencing even higher rates of unemployment. Only 20.5 percent\u00a0of disabled women are employed.<\/p>\n<p>We need to be creating more paths to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in schools and workplaces, not less. With the latest attacks on the most marginalized of us, our future as a thriving, healthy, productive nation is bleak.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We can\u2019t let that happen. I might not be able to walk anymore, but I have a voice, and I\u2019m going to use it.
