{"id":178314,"date":"2025-04-09T06:31:56","date_gmt":"2025-04-09T06:31:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/aerospace\/hundreds-call-for-avelo-boycott-over-deportation-flights\/"},"modified":"2025-04-09T06:31:56","modified_gmt":"2025-04-09T06:31:56","slug":"hundreds-call-for-avelo-boycott-over-deportation-flights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=178314","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds call for Avelo boycott over deportation flights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>US low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines is facing backlash after reaching an agreement with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to operate federal deportation flights.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The flights, which will be operated from Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA), Arizona from May 2025, are a part of the Trump administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/crs-product\/LSB11265\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">broader strategy<\/a> to tighten immigration controls, including halting entry at the southern border and increasing interior enforcement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Avelo informed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/us-airline-partners-ice-long-term-deal-carry-out-deportation-flights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fox News<\/a> that they would have three aircraft departing from Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) to \u201csupport the department\u2019s deportation efforts.\u201d\u00a0A spokesperson for the airline said that the aircraft will include three 737-800s, with both domestic and international flights set to commence on May 12, 2025.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the airline\u2019s CEO Andrew Levy admitted that this decision could spark controversy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe realize this is a sensitive and complicated topic,\u201d Levy said in a statement seen by Fox News. \u201cAfter significant deliberations, we determined this charter flying will provide us with the stability to continue expanding our core scheduled passenger service and keep our more than 1,100 crewmembers employed for years to come.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Change.org, a website which allows users to create and sign petitions, has released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/we-won-t-fly-avelo-until-they-stop-ice-flights-no-volaremos-con-avelo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a> indicating that the airline is currently in the process of <a href=\"https:\/\/recruiting.paylocity.com\/Recruiting\/Jobs\/Details\/3173329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hiring staff<\/a>, including flight attendants, aircraft technicians, as well as local leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-leaderboard bn-1\"\/>\n<p>An internal memo that was leaked reveals that these deportation flights will make up for operating losses at Tweed New Haven Airport (HVN), thereby funding New Haven\u2019s Airport through \u201ccruel deportation practices\u201d, Change.org statement continued. New Haven is Avelo\u2019s largest hub, with more flights in and out of HVN than any other airport.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In response, Change.org reported that currently hundreds of people are signing a petition to boycott Avelo until it halts plans to carry out deportation flights. Currently more than 3,400 people have signed the petition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The petition was launched by the New Haven Immigrants Coalition, a group advocating for immigrant rights in the region, where Avelo Airlines\u2019 main East Coast hub is located.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-leaderboard bn-2\"\/>\n<p>\u201cTrump\u2019s cruel policies go against everything we stand for,\u201d the Change.org petition reads. \u201cThese flights are inhumane, dangerous, and, in some cases, illegal.
