I use it all the<br \/>\ntime and for pretty much everything I put in the oven. (<i>Disclosure: I<br \/>\nam including affiliate links for your convenience<\/i>.)<\/p>\n<p>Which I learned is a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>The food I bake on my pizza stone is starting to taste weird. The<br \/>\nstone smells and smokes when I put it in a hot oven.\n<\/p>\n<p>Why?\n<\/p>\n<p>Because baking and pizza stones are porous. That\u2019s how they do<br \/>\ntheir job of creating perfectly baked bread and pizza crusts. But the<br \/>\nporous stone can also absorb and trap the fats and oils in the food<br \/>\nbaked on top of it. Over time, the oil heats and releases into the<br \/>\nlovely seasoning you created by baking on the stone and makes your<br \/>\npizza or bread taste awful and\/or fill your kitchen with eye watering<br \/>\nsmoke. Bleach!<\/p>\n<p>In other words, I should have used a metal baking sheet to make<br \/>\noven baked French fries and not my baking stone. Share it with your friends!<\/i><\/div>\n<p>You should <span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>not<\/b><\/span><br \/>\nwash a pizza stone with soap and water because the same porous<br \/>\nsurface that absorbed the oil or fat (like cheese) will do the exact<br \/>\nsame thing with dish washing detergent. Then your baking stone will<br \/>\ntaste like rancid oil and soap.  No thanks.<\/p>\n<p>The best and easiest way to remove the bad taste and wash a baking<br \/>\nand pizza stone is in the refrigerator case of your favorite grocery<br \/>\nstore &#8211;  a tube of biscuits or crescent rolls! I suggest buying the<br \/>\ncheapest tube of rolls you can find because you will throw it away (I<br \/>\ncomposed mine) when you are done.<\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> Remove the biscuit dough from the tube.<\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> Cover the entire pizza or baking stone with the dough. As the dough bakes it will draw the rancid fat and oil<br \/>\nfrom the baking stone and into the dough.\n<\/p>\n<p><b>4.<\/b> Remove the stone from the oven. Allow it to cool until it is<br \/>\nsafe enough to handle.
