It\u2019s a common claim. And it sounds like a solid marketing strategy.<\/p>\n
But what if the people who could be referring you\u2026 don\u2019t actually remember you?<\/p>\n
That\u2019s the missing link I\u2019ve talked about for years and why I have a talk focused on. The 3 Rs: How to be better Remembered, Referred and Recommended. Most accountants rely on the latter two but you can\u2019t skip the first one. Because if people don\u2019t remember you, they can\u2019t refer or recommend you.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s really that simple.<\/p>\n
Why you want to be remembered<\/strong>
Because it opens the door to everything else. The right people can\u2019t refer you if they can\u2019t remember your name, your vibe, or who you help. It\u2019s not just about making a good impression. It\u2019s about making a lasting one.<\/p>\nYou\u2019ve probably experienced this yourself. You meet someone who seems lovely. You have a great chat. You even think, \u201cI should refer so-and-so to them.\u201d But a week later\u2026 you\u2019ve forgotten their name. Or what they actually did. That connection goes nowhere.<\/p>\n
What needs to be remembered?<\/strong>
Not your firm\u2019s name. Not your logo. Not your website tagline. At least they\u2019re not as important as YOU being remembered.<\/p>\nPeople refer people. Rarely do they say, \u201cYou should contact that firm of accountants XYZ & Co.\u201d Far more often it\u2019s, \u201cYou should speak to Claire \u2013 she\u2019s great. She helped me loads.\u201d<\/p>\n
So it\u2019s you they need to remember. Your name. What you\u2019re good at. The types of clients you work best with. And ideally, something that makes you a bit different from other accountants. Something human. Something relatable. Even quirky.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve been remembered for years as \u201cthe magician accountant.\u201d But that\u2019s just the hook. It gets me noticed \u2013 by journalists, conference organisers, accountants. But if I wasn\u2019t also seen as helpful, insightful and pragmatic, the memory wouldn\u2019t lead to referrals or recommendations.<\/p>\n
Being memorable opens the door. Being good at what you do makes people want to walk through it.<\/p>\n
Referrals vs recommendations<\/strong>
We all make referrals. \u201cTry this app.\u201d \u201cCall this firm.\u201d \u201cHave a look at this website.\u201d<\/p>\nA referral is a directional nudge \u2013 a suggestion. But it carries no guarantee. No personal stake.<\/p>\n
A recommendation is different. It\u2019s an endorsement. It\u2019s when someone says, \u201cI\u2019ve worked with them. I trust them. You won\u2019t regret it.\u201d That carries far more weight than a simple referral.<\/p>\n
And crucially \u2013 people are more likely to make that leap to recommending you when they feel like they know you. Not just your work. You.<\/p>\n
So let people in. Show some personality. Be more than just professional.<\/p>\n
What makes you memorable?<\/strong>
Most of us find it easiest to remember things and people who stand out from the crowd and the norm<\/p>\nAnd that can be a double-edged sword.<\/p>\n
Remember \u201cDouble Business Card Charlie\u201d? He proudly told me he\u2019d handed out over 2,000 cards at networking events. \u201cNever got any referrals,\u201d he said. \u201cWaste of time.\u201d<\/p>\n
He stood out, alright \u2013 as a bit of a nuisance. He wasn\u2019t remembered fondly. He was remembered for being all about himself. And that\u2019s not the goal here.<\/p>\n
Think instead about the people you remember positively. The ones who shared a personal story. Who listened well. Who had a spark. Who made you laugh or made you think. They stood out because they were different. Genuine. Authentic.<\/p>\n
You can do the same.<\/p>\n
How to be better remembered<\/strong>
It\u2019s not about wearing a bowler hat or dressing in purple (yes, I\u2019ve met people who did both in an effort to stand out). It\u2019s about finding simple ways to let the real you come through.<\/p>\nLet people know what you care about. What excites you. Share stories from your day-to-day work or life. Use your own voice \u2013 not the generic, polished tone you think accountants should use.<\/p>\n
The more you lean into being your authentic true self, the easier it becomes for people to connect with you, remember you, and yes \u2013 refer and recommend you.<\/p>\n
