{"id":177565,"date":"2025-04-08T16:27:34","date_gmt":"2025-04-08T16:27:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/finance\/elon-musk-slams-donald-trumps-trade-tsar-in-sign-of-rift-over-us-tariffs\/"},"modified":"2025-04-08T16:27:34","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T16:27:34","slug":"elon-musk-slams-donald-trumps-trade-tsar-in-sign-of-rift-over-us-tariffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=177565","title":{"rendered":"Elon Musk slams Donald Trump\u2019s trade tsar in sign of rift over US tariffs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\">Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=a86385b3-4479-41f1-84a1-0c9af42c78b6&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Elon Musk has lambasted the architect of Donald Trump\u2019s trade war in the most public display to date of a potential rift between the US president and the world\u2019s richest man.<\/p>\n<p>In an extraordinary <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1909605316121198860\" data-trackable=\"link\">broadside<\/a> on Tuesday morning, Musk, a long-standing critic of tariffs, called trade tsar Peter Navarro a \u201cmoron\u201d, and \u201cdumber than a sack of bricks\u201d, after the economist dismissed the Tesla boss in a TV interview as a \u201ccar assembler\u201d and accused him of \u201cprotecting his own interests\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The feud comes after days in which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/stream\/fdf71598-69ee-4801-a704-df53f01ef286\" data-trackable=\"link\">Musk<\/a>, who spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars on Trump\u2019s campaign and who runs the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), repeatedly hinted at his dissatisfaction with the White House\u2019s trade policy.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing virtually at a conference organised by Italy\u2019s rightwing deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini over the weekend, Musk said he was hopeful the US and Europe would reach \u201ca zero-tariff situation, effectively creating a free-trade zone\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Musk also shared a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1909169096391811304\" data-trackable=\"link\">video<\/a> on his social media platform X in which the free-market advocate Milton Friedman extolled the virtues of a globalised economy by pondering the different parts and labour that are necessary to make a single pencil.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Musk\u2019s brother Kimbal, who is on the boards of Tesla and SpaceX, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/trump-tariffs\" data-trackable=\"link\">Trump\u2019s tariffs<\/a> a \u201cstructural, permanent tax on the American consumer\u201d, in a post on X. \u201cA tax on consumption also means less consumption. Which means less jobs,\u201d Kimbal added.<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s political influence was under pressure before Trump unveiled his sweeping tariffs last week, after the billionaire\u2019s preferred candidate in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8ace0235-151c-4aa8-8b46-5e57bdb19b0c\" data-trackable=\"link\">Wisconsin supreme court race<\/a> lost heavily in a contest that became a referendum on Doge\u2019s cost-cutting tactics. <\/p>\n<p>The White House also confirmed last week that Musk\u2019s government role, which was originally meant to continue into 2026, could end within weeks, once his work with Doge is complete. Trump said the billionaire was at some point \u201cgoing to get back to his businesses full time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, some of Musk\u2019s enterprises appear to have suffered from his association with the president. Tesla\u2019s stock has plunged more than 35 per cent since the start of the year amid concerns about a growing trade war and anger towards the company from consumers opposed to Musk\u2019s aggressive cost-cutting mission within the government.<\/p>\n<p>In an unsigned letter addressed to US trade representative Jamieson Greer last month, Tesla warned that a trade war could make it a target for retaliatory tariffs and increase the cost of making vehicles in America.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The electric-car company\u2019s second-biggest market is China, where Tesla also has a large plant.
