Early yesterday afternoon, the Bailey <\/b>family returned from a
\nshort but relaxing four-day cruise across the North Sea<\/b> to the port of Hamburg
\n<\/b>and back. This trip marked not only a welcome return to Germany\u2019s<\/b> second
\nlargest city but also acted as son Matthew’s<\/b> first visit to Hamburg.<\/b> It was also
\nhis first cruise experience, and whilst he has not expressed much verbally, Mrs
\nPBTS <\/b>and I are confident that he enjoyed the trip as much as we did. Our home
\nfor this brief cruise was the lovely Queen Victoria<\/b>, our favourite ship amongst
\nCunard’s<\/b> fleet of four Queens.<\/b> This was our first voyage on the ship since early
\nDecember 2022,<\/b> when Victoria t<\/b>ransported us across the same stretch of ocean to
\nAmsterdam<\/b>, for a short pre-Christmas<\/b> break.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The weather was cold but generally bright, except for the
\nday in Hamburg <\/b>when it rained intermittently, and sometimes quite heavily.
\nMatthew<\/b> and I ventured into the city to explore, seeking beer, German fayre<\/b>, as
\nwell as a spot of sightseeing. As mentioned in a previous post, our visit
\noccurred on a Sunday,<\/b> when nearly all the shops were closed. A more pressing
\nissue was that several bars were also closed, including the one that had caught
\nmy interest, whist looking online for houses of refreshment, the previous
\nnight. All was not lost though, as in the end, and quite by chance, we stumbled
\nupon one of the best, and one of the most traditional of venues where we
\nenjoyed some of the best hospitality that Hamburg <\/b>had to offer.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

For now, I’ll set aside my afternoon in Hamburg<\/b> to share
\nmore about our voyage. My wife provided me with this information, but I could
\nhave discovered it myself if I weren’t so lazy. Hamburg <\/b>was Queen Victoria’s<\/b>
\nfinal port of call on what had been a lengthy journey halfway around the world.
\nThe ship travelled across the Atlantic<\/b>, around several Caribbean <\/b>islands, before heading
\nsouthwards towards the tip of South America,<\/b> taking in Brazil, Argentina<\/b> and
\nChile<\/b> on the way. Victoria<\/b> then sailed back up the western side of the
\ncontinent before returning to the Atlantic,<\/b> via the Panama Canal. <\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

We joined the ship at Southampton,<\/b> for the final leg of this
\nmarathon cruise, which was the four-night cruise to Hamburg. <\/b>That marathon voyage
\nwould require a lot of stamina, as well as a considerable amount of dosh, but set
\nagainst the chance of seeing some amazing sights and some equally fascinating
\ncountries, I\u2019m sure it would have been worth it. On our voyage back from
\nHamburg<\/b> the majority of passengers were Brits<\/b>, but there was still a reasonable
\ncompliment of German <\/b>nationals. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

In all this, please spare a thought for the ship\u2019s crew, the
\npeople who sail and navigate the vessel through busy and often crowded
\nwaterways. The same applies to the whole of the ship\u2019s company, who contribute
\nto the successful running a vessel of that size. Let’s not forget either the
\ncooks, the other kitchen staff, the waiters and the entertainment staff.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Finally, special thanks must go to the stewards who look after the cabins, working
\ntirelessly through long shifts, cleaning up after untidy passengers, making
\nsure everything is in its place, and that the guest rooms are spick and span. These unsung
\nheroes, work lengthy contracts, with little time off, and with virtually no chance
\neither to experience the sights and general ambience of the places the ship visits over
\nthe course of the cruise.<\/p>\n

Apologies, that there’s nothing in the way of beer, and also for withholding,
\nfor the time being, details of that beer house we experienced in Hamburg.<\/b> Truth
\nis, it\u2019s been a rather hectic first day back at work, and I\u2019m feeling the effects
\nof coming back down to earth with a bump. Consequently, I just wanted to get something
\ndown on the blog, after a break of nearly a week. More to come, of course, over
