As Cuba\u2019s farmers turn to solar energy to combat power shortages and climate challenges, their shift highlights how clean energy can drive climate resilience, boost productivity, and better transform rural economies.<\/em><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Cuba\u00a0endured several prolonged, nationwide power outages in 2024, a result of its aging fossil fuel-based energy infrastructure. While media coverage has focused on the pitch-black metropolises, rural communities also suffered severe consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Small-scale farmers need energy for everything from irrigating their land to safely storing their harvested produce. Without it, agriculture is less productive and post-harvest losses can be significant, slashing their incomes and food security.<\/p>\n<p>But along the island nation\u2019s eastern coastline, a\u00a0clean energy\u00a0transition is brewing. By turning to solar panels, small-scale farmers here are standing strong in the face of recurring crises \u2013 and protecting the planet we all depend on.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shining a light<\/h2>\n<p>Martha and her husband grow aubergines, plantains, tomatoes and other crops in Holgu\u00edn Province. Like other small-scale farmers, they have been reckoning with the <a href=\"https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/2023\/08\/unlocking-the-power-of-youth-in-tackling-climate-change\/\">impacts<\/a> of climate change. Long dry seasons are normal in this part of Cuba but the climate has become more extreme and droughts are increasingly frequent.<\/p>\n<p>The changing conditions make it especially important for Martha to have a reliable source of electricity \u2013 something that has not been easy to come by lately.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"999\" height=\"666\" src=\"https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/cuba-clean-energy-01.jpg\" alt=\"Martha on her farm in Cuba. Image from IFAD\/Factstory.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But Martha has been able to protect her crops thanks to new solar panels, which convert sunlight into clean, reliable electricity. Supported by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifad.org\/en\/initiatives\/china-south-south-cooperation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China-IFAD SSTC Facility<\/a>\u00a0and implemented by the World Food Programme, the Gibara Verde X Ciento project provided the panels to Martha and other farmers like her.<\/p>\n<p>When rainfall is sparse, Martha can depend on her solar panels for the energy she needs to pump water and irrigate her field. Despite ongoing issues with the national power grid, Martha\u2019s production has continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a deficit of electricity,\u201d says Martha. \u201cBut this modern system helps us ensure irrigation, and irrigation is key to ensuring production.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Powering sustainable growth through clean energy<\/h2>\n<p>Close to 760 million people around the globe still live without electricity, most of them in rural areas. Many small-scale farmers still rely on burning biomass such as wood, charcoal and animal dung to fill this energy gap, contributing to environmental degradation and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Clean energy sources offer an alternative. And as Martha has shown, decarbonising our food systems doesn\u2019t just benefit the planet. By making farming more efficient and sustainable, it can also boost productivity and transform rural economies.<\/p>\n<p>As climate change heightens the energy needs of small-scale farmers, clean energy can restore the agricultural strength of communities in Cuba and around the world.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"999\" height=\"666\" src=\"https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/cuba-clean-energy-02.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Leyva, right, gives a workshop to farmers. Image from IFAD\/Factstory.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis is a region that was once considered the breadbasket of Cuba, but climate variability has significantly impacted crop yields, leading many people to stop planting certain crops altogether,\u201d says Robert Leyva, head of the UEICA-H Basic Grains Research Department.<\/p>\n<p>With local production currently insufficient to meet demand, Cuba imports\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfpusa.org\/countries\/cuba\/#:~:text=Cuba%20imports%2070%20to%2080,of%20state%20farms%20into%20cooperatives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">up to 80 per cent<\/a>\u00a0of its food. But if its rural communities continue the transition to clean energy, this could change.<\/p>\n<p>Renewable energy can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifad.org\/en\/w\/rural-voices\/clean-energy-thriving-rural-communities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transform rural areas\u00a0<\/a>by boosting agriculture, raising livelihoods and improving public health.
