Outlets like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/mar\/31\/israel-killed-15-palestinian-paramedics-and-rescue-workers-one-by-one-says-un\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Guardian<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/crkxm1rg6k1o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the BBC<\/a>\u00a0are covering the story of how 15 medical workers for the Red Crescent, Civil Defense, and the UN were apparently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/apr\/01\/palestinian-paramedics-shot-by-israeli-forces-had-hands-tied-eyewitnesses-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">handcuffed<\/a>\u00a0and executed one by one by Israeli forces in Rafah before being buried in a mass grave. According to Palestinian Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal, they were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/bodies-gaza-medics-found-handcuffed-and-shot-mass-grave\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">each shot more than 20 times<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(As an aside, the fact that Israeli forces\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/videos\/world\/2024\/03\/30\/gaza-idf-kills-2-palestinians-buries-bodies-bulldozer-coren-vpx.cnn\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have been known<\/a>\u00a0to bury the victims of their atrocities in order to hide the evidence is one of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/wY9RJ\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">many reasons<\/a>\u00a0why the official death toll from the Israeli onslaught in Gaza is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/opinion\/real-death-toll-gaza\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">definitely<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jan\/10\/gaza-death-toll-40-higher-than-official-number-lancet-study-finds\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">massive undercount<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked by the BBC\u2019s Tom Bateman about these reports during a Monday press briefing, State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce responded by babbling about how evil Hamas is and how they are to blame for everything bad that happens in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tombateman?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@tombateman<\/a>: UN says 15 medics and workers were killed \u2018one by one\u2019 by the IDF, they have dug bodies up\u2026given potential use of American weapons is there any assessment of compliance with international law?<\/p><p>StateSpox: Hamas abuses civilian infrastructure<\/p><p>Tom: It\u2019s a question\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Od6Ie7L7UM\">pic.twitter.com\/Od6Ie7L7UM<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Assal Rad (@AssalRad) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AssalRad\/status\/1906783335269204426?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 31, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/briefings\/department-press-briefing-march-31-2025\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">transcript of the exchange<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Bateman:\u00a0<\/strong>On Gaza, the UN\u2019s Humanitarian Affairs Office has said that 15 paramedics, Civil Defense, and a UN worker were killed\u200a\u2014\u200ain their words, one by one\u200a\u2014\u200aby the IDF. They have dug bodies up, they said, in a shallow grave that have been gathered up, and also vehicles in the sand. Have you got any assessment of what might have happened? And given the potential use of American weapons, is there any assessment of whether or not this complied with international law?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Bruce:<\/strong>\u00a0Well, I can tell you that for too long Hamas has abused civilian infrastructure, cynically using it to shield themselves. Hamas\u2019s actions have caused humanitarians to be caught in the crossfire. The use of civilians or civilian objects to shield or impede military operations is itself a violation of international humanitarian law, and of course we expect all parties on the ground to comply with international humanitarian law.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Bateman:<\/strong>\u00a0But there\u2019s specifically a question on any\u200a\u2014\u200ait\u2019s a question about accounting and accountability given there may have been the use of U.S. weapons, so it\u2019s a question about the State Department rather than Hamas. Is there any actions\u200a\u2014\u200a<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Bruce:<\/strong>\u00a0Well, every single thing that is happening in Gaza is happening because of Hamas\u200a\u2014\u200aevery single dynamic. I\u2019ll say again\u200a\u2014\u200aI\u2019ve said it, I think, in every briefing\u200a\u2014\u200aall of this could stop in a moment if Hamas returned all the hostages and the hostage bodies they are still holding and put down its weapons. There is one\u200a\u2014\u200aone entity that could stop it for everyone in a moment, and that is Hamas. This is\u200a\u2014\u200aall loss of life is regrettable\u200a\u2014\u200ait\u2019s key, obviously\u200a\u2014\u200awhoever it is, wherever they live. And this has been the nature of what fuels Secretary Rubio and President Trump in their willingness to expend this kind of capital early on in this term to make a difference and to change the situation. So I think that\u2019s\u200a\u2014\u200athat is the one thing that remains clear in all of this.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>At no time does Bruce attempt to deny that the atrocity happened or cast doubt on the veracity of the claims, only justifying Israel\u2019s actions by blaming Hamas. Again, this is a story about medical workers being handcuffed and then executed by gunfire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-2 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Please watch StateSpox respond to a simple question from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SMArikat?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SMArikat<\/a> about getting aid into Gaza, especially water.<\/p><p>First she falsely blames Hamas for the ceasefire when Israel refused to go to phase two and broke it by slaughtering Palestinians, then it\u2019s 2 minutes of nonsense to\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bQSfNFbg4R\">pic.twitter.com\/bQSfNFbg4R<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Assal Rad (@AssalRad) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AssalRad\/status\/1904260020617003026?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 24, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Tammy Bruce does this constantly; she did it in response to two separate questions at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/briefings\/department-press-briefing-march-24-2025\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a press conference last week<\/a>. When asked about Israel\u2019s assassination of Palestinian journalists Hossam Shabat and Mohammad Mansour, Bruce responded by babbling about October 7 and saying \u201cevery single thing that\u2019s happening is a result of Hamas and its choices to drag that region down into a level of suffering that has been excruciating and has caused innumerable deaths.\u201d When asked about the fact that people in Gaza have been unable to access clean drinking water under the Israeli siege, Bruce said, \u201cHamas did not perform to make sure that the ceasefire could continue, that they did not do what they said they would do. So we know, of course, when it comes to the ground water, of course, this is\u200a\u2014\u200ait\u2019s a crisis. It\u2019s exacerbated by the fact that you have a terrorist group that just doesn\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She did it again at a press conference the week before when asked by journalist Said Arikat if the State Department considers Israel\u2019s use of siege warfare on a civilian population a war crime, saying \u201cFor the horrible suffering of the Gazan people, we know where that sits: it sits with Hamas,\u201d adding that the people of Gaza \u201chave been suffering because of the choices that Hamas has made throughout the years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arikat, by the way, has just\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SMArikat\/status\/1906785689032626681\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a>\u00a0that on Monday he was not called on to ask a question for the first time in nearly 25 years of attending State Department press briefings. He is one of the very few reporters at the State Department who regularly asks challenging questions about US foreign policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-3 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I suppose it was bound to happen. For the first time in close to a quarter of a century of attending the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StateDept?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@StateDept<\/a> briefings, I was not given a question.<\/p>\u2014 Said Arikat (@SMArikat) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SMArikat\/status\/1906785689032626681?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 31, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So it\u2019s plain as day that there\u2019s absolutely no crime Israel could possibly commit that Trump\u2019s State Department wouldn\u2019t defend. When the press would ask Miller about Israeli atrocities, he\u2019d have to put on a whole show about how the Biden administration is in conversation with Israel and waiting for more information about these very serious allegations, all while fighting to keep his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/decensorednews\/status\/1810817961189400781\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">notorious smirk<\/a>\u00a0off his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be clear, these two positions are not meaningfully different from one another. Pretending to care about very serious atrocity allegations while continuing to sponsor those atrocities is exactly the same as not pretending to care about very serious atrocity allegations while continuing to sponsor those atrocities. One is a pile of dead children with a smiley face sticker on it, the other is a pile of dead children with a frowny face sticker on it. The children are just as dead either way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And you really couldn\u2019t ask for a better illustration of the difference between Democrats and Republicans than this. The Democrats are just the polite, photogenic face of the bloodthirsty US empire, while the Republicans are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caitlinjohnst.one\/p\/donald-trump-is-the-empire-unmasked\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the empire unmasked<\/a>. The Democrats commit genocide and ethnic cleansing while denying they\u2019re committing genocide and ethnic cleansing, while Republicans commit genocide and ethnic cleansing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caitlinjohnst.one\/p\/the-empire-at-its-most-honest\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">without bothering to disguise<\/a>\u00a0what they\u2019re doing as something else. One\u2019s prettier, one\u2019s uglier.
