{"id":175864,"date":"2025-04-07T16:51:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-07T16:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/aquarium\/monsoon-aquatics-yearly-coral-spawning-wrap-up-reef-builders\/"},"modified":"2025-04-07T16:51:00","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T16:51:00","slug":"monsoon-aquatics-yearly-coral-spawning-wrap-up-reef-builders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=175864","title":{"rendered":"Monsoon Aquatics Yearly Coral Spawning Wrap Up | Reef Builders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>I reached out to Monsoon Aquatics for an update on this seasons coral spawning \u2013 they provided me with the following information.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Season Wrap Up<\/h2>\n<p>Every October for the past five years, the team at Monsoon Aquatics has embarked on the annual coral spawning season at their farm in Burnett Heads, Queensland, Australia.\u00a0Strap on your head torches, pump the red lights, and let us take you through this year\u2019s wrap-up\u2026..<\/p>\n<p>During the 2024-25 season, we spawned, settled, and grew out the following species:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Acropora (microclados, tenuis, millipora and spathulata)<\/li>\n<li>Micromussa lordhowensis (Acan lords)<\/li>\n<li>Trachyphyllia geoffroyi<\/li>\n<li>Homophyllia australis (Scoly)<\/li>\n<li>Euphyllia glabrescens (Torch)<\/li>\n<li>Gonipora species<\/li>\n<li>Echinophyllia species (Chalice)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We currently have over 40,000 settled corals currently growing out from this spawn run! Spawning the Acropora species proved quite easy, which is promising for our future reef restoration projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Continuous Improvement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Each year, we are improving our systems, procedures, and ultimate production.\u00a0This continual improvement has allowed us to experiment this season with selective breeding to produce (in theory) a higher number of chimera, ultra, and master-grade corals.\u00a0The early results from our selective breeding trials with scolymia will be evident soon, so stay tuned.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" src=\"https:\/\/reefbuilders.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2025\/04\/Image-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-169699\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reefbuilders.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2025\/04\/Image-5.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/reefbuilders.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2025\/04\/Image-5-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/reefbuilders.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2025\/04\/Image-5-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/reefbuilders.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2025\/04\/Image-5-770x513.jpg 770w, https:\/\/reefbuilders.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2025\/04\/Image-5-20x13.jpg 20w, https:\/\/reefbuilders.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2025\/04\/Image-5-385x257.jpg 385w, https:\/\/reefbuilders.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2025\/04\/Image-5-1540x1026.jpg 1540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Checking for signs of spawning in corals each evening during spawning season<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One thing we are learning about conservation aquaculture is that baby corals have a mind of their own and won\u2019t always do as they are told or encouraged to!\u00a0As our settlement and survival rates improve, we are faced with the new problem of too many recruits choosing the same spots to settle and grow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is particularly a problem when it comes to producing corals for deployment in reef restoration projects, as the baby corals need to be separated out to one or two per block for deployment devices. The next step is to get these guys to spread out a little. We have some ideas that we will employ during this year\u2019s spawning runs.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Beautiful Mistakes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>However, every cloud has a silver lining, and in this case, overcrowded settlement has produced the beautiful mistakes that are our unique scoly gardens.
