Crawford, backed by Democrats in the wink-wink nonpartisan race, snared <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/projects\/election-results-2025\/wisconsin\/?r=50888\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (55 percent )\">55 percent <\/a>of the vote against Schimel, who was backed by Republicans including President Donald Trump and his sidekick Elon Musk. The election was called within an hour of the polls closing. Her margin of victory was about 236,000 votes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was supposed to be the closest election since the last close election in Wisconsin,\u201d says Jay Heck, executive director of Common Cause in Wisconsin, referring to the November presidential contest when Trump won the state by <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/projects\/election-results-2024\/wisconsin\/?r=0\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (less than 30,000)\">less than 30,000<\/a> votes. \u201cAnd [instead], it looks like a massive repudiation of Musk and Trump and everything that\u2019s happened since January 20.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heck says Schimel \u201cwrapped himself in Elon Musk and sought Trump\u2019s endorsement and received it.\u201d Crawford, meanwhile, \u201cwisely distanced herself from the partisans in the Democratic Party,\u201d including Bernie Sanders and Tim Walz, who came to Wisconsin to boost her candidacy. And the voters of Wisconsin, Heck adds, chose to \u201creclaim their state from the national conservative movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a town hall meeting in Green Bay last Sunday, Musk, wearing a cheesehead hat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/news\/elon-musk-wisconsin-supreme-court-race-green-bay-visit-million-dollar-checks\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (declared)\">declared<\/a> that Wisconsin\u2019s state supreme court election is \u201cgoing to affect the entire destiny of humanity.\u201d While that might be a bit overblown, it was in fact a hugely important election, one that will decide the future of reproductive rights in Wisconsin, as well as labor rights, voting rights, and the possible redrawing of Congressional districts to weaken Republicans\u2019 current advantage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was the most expensive judicial race in U.S. history, with total spending in excess of about <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jrrosswrites\/status\/1906723257325076776\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window ($105 million)\">$105 million<\/a>, mostly for television ads in which the opposing candidate was portrayed as a wholehearted supporter of violent criminals, especially child rapists. That\u2019s more than twice the previous record of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisdc.org\/news\/press-releases\/139-press-release-2023\/7390-wisconsin-supreme-court-race-cost-record-51m\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window ($51 million)\">$51 million<\/a>, set in Wisconsin\u2019s last supreme court race, in 2023, when liberal candidate Janet Protasiewicz beat conservative Dan Kelly by an eleven-point margin.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>In all, Musk and affiliated groups <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/30\/us\/elon-musk-wisconsin-supreme-court.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (pumped)\">pumped<\/a> more than $20 million into the race on Schimel\u2019s behalf. The tech billionaire <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/wisconsin-supreme-court-musk-trump-b9be6119d500bdacc9c6341be013cd62\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (offered)\">offered<\/a> $100 payments to voters who signed a petition opposing activist judges and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/news\/elon-musk-wisconsin-supreme-court-race-green-bay-visit-million-dollar-checks\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (handed out)\">handed out<\/a> two $1 million checks to rally-goers, in possible violation of state law.<\/p>\n<p>Musk framed the election as a referendum on the Trump Administration, urging voters to elect Schimel to advance Trump\u2019s agenda, more than two months into a second term that is proving to be even more boundary-pushing than the one that came before. And Schimel <a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsinexaminer.com\/2025\/03\/06\/schimel-tells-canvassers-hell-be-support-network-for-trump-and-rehashes-election-conspiracies\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (spoke openly)\">spoke openly<\/a> of providing the increasingly unpopular President with a \u201csupport network.\u201d Those proved to be unwise decisions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gather that Schimel felt that he needed to turn out the Trump voters to have a chance of winning,\u201d Heck says. \u201cBut I think this probably demonstrates that Trump voters vote for Trump, and they may be pretty undependable if he\u2019s not on the ballot. So you\u2019re much better off trying to distance yourself from other partisan politicians. And I think Crawford did a much better job of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crawford, in her victory speech at the Park Hotel in downtown Madison, joked about \u201ctaking on the richest man in the world . . . and we won.\u201d She framed the election result as a victory for judicial probity:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, Wisconsinites fended off an unprecedented attack on our democracy, our fair elections, and our supreme court. And Wisconsin[ites] stood up and said, loudly, that justice does not have a price, our courts are not for sale.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At Crawford\u2019s election-night party, the sentiment of the moment was one of \u201chuge relief,\u201d as one woman put it after the race was called. \u201cPeople listen. Money isn\u2019t everything,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt says so much about who we are,\u201d a man exiting the event was overheard telling another attendee. \u201cYou can\u2019t buy us.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>In this supreme court election, as with the one in 2023 that shifted control of the court to liberals for the <a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsinexaminer.com\/2023\/04\/14\/liberals-havent-controlled-the-wisconsin-supreme-court-for-more-than-15-years-if-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (first time in decades)\">first time in decades<\/a>, Dane County voters played a huge role. But this time the turnout was even higher\u2014more than <a href=\"https:\/\/elections.countyofdane.com\/Election-Result\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (280,000)\">280,000<\/a> votes in Dane County compared to about <a href=\"https:\/\/elections.wi.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/County%20by%20County%20Report_SCOWIS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (240,000)\">240,000<\/a> two years ago. In both elections, the liberal candidate garnered about 82 percent of the county total. The total number of votes cast statewide also increased, from <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Wisconsin_Supreme_Court_elections,_2023\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (1,843,480)\">1,843,480<\/a> in 2023 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/04\/01\/us\/elections\/results-wisconsin-supreme-court.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (more than 2.2 million)\">more than 2.2 million<\/a> in this year\u2019s election.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Crawford\u2019s win means liberals will control the court at least through 2028, although there is no reason to believe the state supreme court elections slated for each of the next five years will be any less hard-fought, costly, or contentious.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Once upon a time, Heck notes, Wisconsin \u201chad $500,000 supreme court elections and candidates who sought the endorsement of former governors of both political parties. That was twenty-five years ago. Will we ever get back there? Probably not, but we could certainly put some limits on the amount of money that\u2019s raised and spent. We could certainly put into place stronger recusal rules, particularly with regard to campaign contributions.\u201d He says Wisconsin\u2019s recusal rules rank forty-seventh in the nation in terms of their strength.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Heck is hopeful that these changes can occur. \u201cBut,\u201d he notes, \u201cthat\u2019s going to take time. It took a long time for us to get where we are. Now, it\u2019s going to take some time and education to get us back there.
