After growing up on a farm in Virginia, he decided to pursue a career in agricultural technology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For years, Mr. Filippelli didn\u2019t think much about that conversation, as college friends routinely make such grand declarations that are eventually forgotten. But within a few months of establishing his own architecture firm, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.northhouse.design\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">North House Architects<\/a>, in Grand Haven, Mich., in early 2020,<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>Mr. Coles called \u2014 he was ready for that house.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">By then, Mr. Coles had married Peanut Belk, and the couple had moved to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wildhopefarm.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Wild Hope Farm<\/a>, an organic produce and flower operation that Ms. Belk runs in Chester, S.C. They were in the process of purchasing a 28-acre portion of the 400-acre property owned by Ms. Belk\u2019s parents for $100,000<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>so they could build a house of their own on the farm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The project revived Mr. Coles\u2019s interest in architecture and his admiration for his friend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI worked next to Joe for three years at school and knew what he was good at, and that we would work well together,\u201d said Mr. Coles, now 38. \u201cMaybe this was a consolation prize for not moving back to Virginia or something, but Peanut pretty quickly let me have fun with it, and to lean into the architectural side of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">With plans for a family \u2014 the couple now have three children, ages 1 to 4 \u2014 Ms. Belk, 33, did have ideas about how the home should function.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe wanted to spend as much time outside as possible,\u201d she said. \u201cWe wanted great lighting and a good kitchen. We wanted an open, comfortable space where we could be cooking while hanging out with the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It didn\u2019t take long for Mr. Filippelli and Mr. Coles to arrive at a shared vision for the home. Drawing inspiration from Amish-built pole barns and old tobacco drying sheds, they envisioned a 1,528-square-foot rectangle of a building.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s a super simple form,\u201d Mr. Coles said. \u201cWe landed on a long, low shape with a peaked roof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWithout a doubt, it\u2019s a very agrarian form,\u201d Mr. Filippelli said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But with that traditional shape as a starting point, the friends were also intent on designing a low-cost, high-performance building that reflected a contemporary take on the American farmhouse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOne of the things Peyton said early on, which became a driver, was that he wanted to build it with materials you could find at a local lumber yard,\u201d Mr. Filippelli said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t want to have high-end fabricators coming in,\u201d he noted, to install expensive, exotic materials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">They were pleased to discover that much of the construction-grade lumber they planned to use was actually grown and milled in the area. \u201cIt\u2019s hyperlocal,\u201d Ms. Belk said, much like the produce <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wildhopefarm.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Wild Hope Farm<\/a> sells to its customers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That, in turn, led to a decision to expose the home\u2019s structural elements instead of hiding them behind drywall. Leaving the walls as wood framing and sheathing would have the added advantage of creating an extremely hard-wearing interior.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe decided that we were going to expose the innards of this thing \u2014 the guts of the house \u2014 and move all the insulation to the outside of the walls, where it wraps the whole house like a sweater,\u201d Mr. Filippelli said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The home is built largely with Southern yellow pine, both in lengths of dimensional lumber and plywood. Even where they needed a laminated veneer lumber, or LVL, beam above sliding glass doors opening to a covered porch, they found one from Roseburg, an engineered wood manufacturer just a few miles away.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The closets and cabinets were made from more plywood, and the simple shelves made from pine boards stretch across open walls to help maximize storage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">To clad the exterior, they used cedar that was grown, collected and milled right on the farm into long, slender slats.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe were milling cedar for farm use but also for this house project,\u201d Mr. Belk said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Built by Spoke &amp; Hammer Construction Company, the house took a little more than a year to complete, at a cost of about $550,000, and it was ready for the family in February 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now, Mr. Coles and Ms. Belk relish the sweeping views the house provides, as well as the direct connection it has to the fields.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-11\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got skylights, we\u2019ve got views in every direction,\u201d Mr. Coles said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Preparing meals in the kitchen, Ms. Belk said, \u201cIt\u2019s fun to watch the kids just playing outside.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There\u2019s just one unintended downside to all that glass, they joked. \u201cWe see storms coming, head on,\u201d Mr. Coles said. \u201cThat adds anxiety when you\u2019re farming.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Joe Filippelli was completing architecture school at the University of Michigan\u2019s Taubman College in 2013, his classmate Peyton Coles made him a promise. \u201cPeyton said, \u2018Joe, if you ever start your own office, you can build my house,\u2019\u201d Mr. Filippelli said. \u201cPeople joke about stuff like that, but you never think it\u2019s going to [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":175253,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[12026],"tags":[51784,17564,6325,14206,486,6021,594,3870,68392,6658,69876,69875],"dealstore":[],"offerexpiration":[],"class_list":["post-175252","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-agriculture","tag-agriculture-and-farming","tag-architecture","tag-born","tag-carolina","tag-college","tag-farm","tag-house","tag-promise","tag-real-estate-and-housing-residential","tag-south","tag-south-carolina","tag-wood-and-wood-products"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.4 -
