Scott Fitzgerald\u2019s novel <i>The Great Gatsby<\/i> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abebooks.com\/book-search\/title\/great-gatsby\/author\/fitzgerald\/first-edition\/sortby\/1\/page-1\/\">published<br \/>\nby Charles Scribner\u2019s Sons<\/a>. While I <a href=\"https:\/\/americanstudier.blogspot.com\/2018\/04\/april-10-2018-great-american-novel.html\">have<br \/>\nmy problems with <i>Gatsby<\/i><\/a>, it remains one of our most influential and important<br \/>\nnovels, and one that opens up so many AmericanStudies contexts. So this week I\u2019ll<br \/>\nhighlight a handful of them, leading up to a weekend post featuring fellow<br \/>\nGatsbyStudiers!]<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 106.5pt;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">On the tragic dip that\u2019s as difficult to pin down as the man taking it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 106.5pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ebooks.adelaide.edu.au\/f\/fitzgerald\/f_scott\/gatsby\/chapter8.html\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Jay Gatsby spends his final moments<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"> relaxing in his home\u2019s luxurious swimming pool. As Nick<br \/>\nCarraway is about to leave his neighbor for what turns out to be the last time,<br \/>\nGatsby\u2019s gardener arrives to drain the pool; fall is arriving and the gardener<br \/>\nis worried that \u201cleaves\u2019ll start falling pretty soon and then there\u2019s always<br \/>\ntrouble with the pipes.\u201d But Gatsby asks him to hold off for one more day,<br \/>\nnoting to Nick, \u201cyou know, old sport, I\u2019ve never used that pool all summer.\u201d And<br \/>\nso it is during Gatsby\u2019s first and only dip in his own swimming pool, lying on<br \/>\n\u201ca pneumatic mattress that had amused his guests during the summer,\u201d that the<br \/>\ngrieving George Wilson arrives, an \u201cashen, fantastic figure gliding toward him<br \/>\nthrough the amorphous trees.\u201d Wilson is armed and crazed, seeking vengeance for<br \/>\nthe tragic death of his wife Myrtle, and kills both Gatsby and himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 106.5pt;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">It\u2019s a striking and evocative image and moment, as so many of Fitzgerald\u2019s<br \/>\nare. And like so many others in the novel, it seems clearly symbolic\u2014but of<br \/>\nwhat, exactly? The imminent shift in seasons feels significant\u2014<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Gatsby<\/i> is a novel of summer, and here<br \/>\nthe season has ended but Gatsby is not willing to let it go, not least because<br \/>\nhe has not yet had a chance to enjoy it. Or perhaps the pool is simply a<br \/>\nmicrocosm of Gatsby\u2019s palatial home\u2014the height of luxury and excess, of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bookhaven.stanford.edu\/2013\/05\/the-great-gatsby-and-the-roaring-20s-there-was-a-feeling-that-it-couldnt-really-last-and-it-didnt\/\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">the Roaring 20s<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"> and their<br \/>\ndecadent atmosphere, but offering those thrills less for its actual owner (who<br \/>\nbarely makes use of it as anything other than a host for visitors) and more for<br \/>\nall those guests who come to bathe in its excesses. Or maybe it\u2019s just the<br \/>\nfinal irony in a novel full of them\u2014Gatsby finally takes a moment to relax, for<br \/>\nwhat feels like the first time in years, and looks what it gets him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 106.5pt;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">All of those interpretations hold water (sorry), but I would also note a historical<br \/>\ncontext that it\u2019s easy for us 21<sup>st<\/sup> century readers to forget: like<br \/>\nso many of the novel\u2019s crucial social and technological features (cars, Hollywood<br \/>\nfilms, recorded music), an in-ground swimming pool in the early 1920s<br \/>\nrepresented a striking innovation. The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingpool.com\/pools\/pool-history\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">first such pools in America<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"> had been open<br \/>\nfor less than two decades, and were generally public or communal spaces; it was<br \/>\nnot until more than two decades later, after World War II, that they would<br \/>\nbecome part of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NwzaxUF0k18\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">the typical imagery of the ideal American home<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">. So as with every aspect of Gatsby\u2019s success, here too<br \/>\nhe would seem to have been ahead of the curve, helping to embody the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=l6TBSe9s4QE\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">American Dream<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u2014as well as its dark and<br \/>\nviolent undersides\u2014as it would continue to develop for the rest of the American<br \/>\nCentury, and into our own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Next<br \/>\nGatsbyStudying tomorrow,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Ben<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">PS.
