{"id":172251,"date":"2025-04-05T17:20:27","date_gmt":"2025-04-05T17:20:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/apple-2\/apple-intelligence-first-reactions-from-pure-slop-to-excellent-work\/"},"modified":"2025-04-05T17:20:27","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T17:20:27","slug":"apple-intelligence-first-reactions-from-pure-slop-to-excellent-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=172251","title":{"rendered":"Apple Intelligence first reactions: from &#8216;pure slop&#8217; to &#8216;excellent work&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":" \r\n<br><div>\n\t\t\t\t<p>Apple had been among the tech giants most conspicuously absent from \u2014 or at least, low-key about \u2014 the generative AI craze, at least until today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC 2024) in Cupertino, California, the company unveiled its biggest push into generative AI so far: <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/ai\/apple-announces-apple-intelligence-its-multi-modal-generative-ai-service-for-mac-iphone-ipad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a new service called Apple Intelligence<\/a>, which will offer a variety of features across Apple devices including Mac computers, iPhones, and iPads. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The service is not an app per se, rather, it is a set of features embedded within other popular apps, from web browser Safari (where you can summarize articles) to Mail (where it can rewrite and suggest grammar improvements) to Photos (auto generate photo albums on specific subjects and topics set to music based on a text prompt) to Messages (where it can create custom AI generated emoji and photos of your contacts, as well as event and group photos).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with nearly all new Apple announcements of the company\u2019s storied history, the Apple Intelligence announcement was watched by a large audience of tech workers and journalists, as well as creatives, and some notable entrepreneurs and executives from rival firms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also inspired a wide range of responses, from some interpreting the announcement as underwhelming or undermining of Apple\u2019s reputation as a company where minimalistic and clean designs are prioritized, while others viewed it as one of, if not <em>the<\/em> best examples of generative AI done right. Here are some of the most interesting reactions I saw:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-high-praise-from-former-rivals\">High praise from former rivals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Steven Sinofsky, the former president of the Windows Division at Microsoft and current board partner at Andreessen Horowitz, called Apple Intelligence \u201creally excellent work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is really excellent work. There is a ton that won&#8217;t show up for a long time, but that is precisely what Apple does so well.<\/p>\u2014 Steven Sinofsky (@stevesi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stevesi\/status\/1800234026084766035?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He also said he thought the idea of weaving Apple Intelligence through its various Apple-branded apps was \u201cexactly right and even more so when combined with privacy\/on device.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Excellent. Today was super high on \u201cvision\u201d for Apple with tons of future tense. At the same time their strong point of view is abundantly clear. This is not just privacy and on device, but how they see integration at the platform level. The idea for example of building on top of\u2026<\/p>\u2014 Steven Sinofsky (@stevesi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stevesi\/status\/1800239199180017810?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And, as if that wasn\u2019t enough of a favorable review, Sinofsky also took the opportunity to ding Google and his own former employer Microsoft in comparison to Apple\u2019s approach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The contrast between what Apple is showing and what Google and Microsoft have shown is a stark as ever. This is really important. Apple brings their point of view to the newest technologies, again.<\/p>\u2014 Steven Sinofsky (@stevesi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stevesi\/status\/1800232348912693277?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, Andrej Karpathy, an esteemed researcher who was previously director of artificial intelligence and Autopilot Vision at Tesla (where he competed with Apple\u2019s abandoned self-driving car project) and a co-founder of OpenAI, said in a post on X that he found Apple Intelligence \u201csuper exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Actually, really liked the Apple Intelligence announcement. It must be a very exciting time at Apple as they layer AI on top of the entire OS. A few of the major themes.<\/p><p>Step 1 Multimodal I\/O. Enable text\/audio\/image\/video capability, both read and write. These are the native\u2026<\/p>\u2014 Andrej Karpathy (@karpathy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/karpathy\/status\/1800242310116262150?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-double-standard\">Double standard?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bilawal Sidhu, host of the TED Talks AI Show and a former Google Maps AR\/VR engineer, wrote a lengthy post on X comparing how Apple Intelligence leverages personal data on the device in which it operates, as well as virtual private clouds, to serve up AI responses \u2014 a tack that he saw as similar to Microsoft\u2019s new Recall feature for Windows Copilot + PCs that <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/security\/microsofts-new-recall-feature-for-copilotpcs-draws-criticism-spyware\/\">faced intense backlash from some users and researchers for possible data security risks<\/a>. Microsoft Recall was, as of last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/ai\/microsofts-recall-feature-will-now-be-opt-in-and-double-encrypted-after-privacy-outcry\/\">disabled by default <\/a>and now must be turned on by the user during setup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Apple&#8217;s reality distortion field is strong. It&#8217;s kinda wild that with &#8220;semantic index,&#8221; Apple is basically doing what Microsoft wants to do with AI recall + Copilot, and without any of the big brother backlash.<\/p><p>Semantic index means all your private content (messages, emails,\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dFNy7yTotv\">https:\/\/t.co\/dFNy7yTotv<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Bilawal Sidhu (@bilawalsidhu) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bilawalsidhu\/status\/1800282654673088706?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ai-images-and-genmoji-love-hate\">AI images and Genmoji: love\/hate?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most immediately obvious use cases for Apple Intelligence for regular users is in its ability to create custom imagery and emoji based on their text prompts within Messages and other apps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open source software developer and AI influencer<a href=\"https:\/\/simonwillison.net\/2024\/Jun\/10\/apple-intelligence\/\"> Simon Willison took to his blog<\/a> to commend Apple\u2019s approach toward AI image generation, writing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThis feels like a clever way to address some of the ethical objections people have to this specific category of AI tool:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>If you can\u2019t create photorealistic images, you can\u2019t generate deepfakes or offensive photos of people<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>By having obvious visual styles you ensure that AI generated images are instantly recognizable as such, without watermarks or similar<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Avoiding the ability to clone specific artist\u2019s styles further helps sidestep ethical issues about plagiarism and copyright infringement<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The social implications of this are interesting too.
