I\u2019m a mum of two toddlers and watched the Budget hoping for something meaningful. The tax cuts are fine, but $5 a week won\u2019t stretch far with the way groceries and rent are going. The Treasurer says we\u2019ve turned a corner economically \u2013 is that really the case, or just pre-election spin? I\u2019m trying to make good decisions for our family, but it\u2019s hard to know what to believe. Would love your take.<\/em><\/p>\n

There was nothing meaningful in the Budget.<\/p>\n

The main takeaway?\u00a0<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t look to the government for help \u2013 they\u2019ve got enough problems of their own.<\/p>\n

Yet, as you\u2019re a mum of two toddlers, let\u2019s talk about your occupational drug of choice:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Coffee.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m writing this in a caf\u00e9, newspapers spread out, reading headlines like:<\/p>\n

\u201cLabor\u2019s \u2018top-up\u2019 tax cut is enough for a coffee \u2013 and a brazen pitch for votes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Bulldust!<\/p>\n

I just paid $6 for a macchiato.<\/p>\n

(Yes, my coffee order sounds very \u2026 Melbourne. But my doctor says I need to ease off the cappuccinos \u2013 something about my belly turning into a buddha.)<\/p>\n

Six bucks for a watery espresso with a tablespoon of froth!\u00a0<\/p>\n

So, no, the tax cut\u2019s not even covering your caffeine. And I doubt voters will give a frappuccino about it either \u2013 especially with the average price of a coffee tipped to hit $7 within six months.<\/p>\n

Why?<\/p>\n

Three reasons:<\/p>\n

Wholesale bean prices have doubled in the past year.<\/p>\n

Caf\u00e9 rents and power bills are skyrocketing.<\/p>\n

And high staff costs. Sunday rates mean your man-bun barista is on $39\/hour (and even then the poor bloke still can\u2019t afford his rent!).<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s why it\u2019s been a brutal year for your local caf\u00e9, Narelle.<\/p>\n

Higher prices mean more people will bring it from home, grab a servo brew \u2026 or skip it altogether.<\/p>\n

And that is why nearly one in 11 hospitality businesses have shut shop in the last 12 months.<\/p>\n

So, Narelle, has the economy turned the corner?<\/p>\n

Not if the price of coffee is anything to go by. It\u2019s a frothy little sign that things are still running hot!<\/p>\n
