Featured Artists: Kehinde Wiley

Kehinde Wiley, born in 1977 in Los Angeles, is a groundbreaking American artist celebrated for his unique approach to portraiture. His captivating artworks reimagine individuals of color within the grandeur of classical European settings, challenging traditional notions of power, representation, and identity. By blending elements of art history with contemporary culture, Wiley creates visually striking portraits that confront viewers with questions about race, perception, and the complexities of societal narratives.

One of Wiley’s most notable achievements came in 2018 when he was selected to paint the official portrait of former U.S. President Barack Obama for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, making him the first African-American artist to receive this prestigious commission. This milestone solidified his status as a trailblazer in the art world, further elevating his international renown.

In addition to his artistic endeavors, Wiley is a champion of cultural exchange and community engagement. In 2019, he founded Black Rock Senegal, an artist-in-residence program located in Dakar, Senegal, aimed at fostering collaboration and creativity among artists from diverse backgrounds.

Throughout his career, Wiley has received numerous awards and honors, including the U.S. Department of State’s Medal of Arts and France’s Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions around the world and is held in collections of prominent institutions globally.

With his studios based in Beijing, Dakar, and New York, Wiley continues to push boundaries and provoke meaningful conversations through his art, leaving an indelible mark on the contemporary art landscape.
