{"id":170093,"date":"2025-04-04T01:25:57","date_gmt":"2025-04-04T01:25:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/alabama\/house-committee-kills-bill-requiring-religious-instruction-credit\/"},"modified":"2025-04-04T01:25:57","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T01:25:57","slug":"house-committee-kills-bill-requiring-religious-instruction-credit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=170093","title":{"rendered":"House committee kills bill requiring religious instruction credit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The House Education Policy committee on Wednesday killed a bill that would require all Alabama school systems to adopt policies on allowing academic credit for off-campus \u201creligious instruction\u201d time.<\/p>\n<p>School boards can already offer academic credit for such religious instruction, but <a href=\"https:\/\/alison.legislature.state.al.us\/files\/pdf\/SearchableInstruments\/2025RS\/HB342-int.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HB342<\/a> by Rep. Susan DuBose, R-Hoover, would have made it mandatory for school boards to draft policies on whether and how to allow it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe the answer to religious liberty is more religious liberty, not less, not stifling it,\u201d DuBose said. \u201cI would ask those schools to consider, to find a spot for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Alan Baker, R-Brewton, said he thought the relatively new option has already been performing well in the state with 12 school boards participating. It\u2019s important that local school boards retain local control over whether they adopt policies on participating in religious instruction programs, Baker said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recognize there could be some school systems that have not adopted a policy for whatever reason; I also realized here are some systems that have already been approached about this and have chosen not to adopt a policy,\u201d Baker said. \u201cIt seems to go contrary to what you\u2019re suggesting that there\u2019s local control, because this bill would mandate, require them even if they\u2019ve made a conscious decision that they don\u2019t want to adopt a policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few committee members noted their concerns with school boards being mandated to give up instructional time for these programs.<\/p>\n<p>The committee voted 9-4 against favorable report for the bill, blocking it from going forward other the full House for consideration.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement.
