A number agreed that \u201cthe killer\u201d had plotted the murder in advance. \u201cThis young piece of **** needs to face what he did. He is a disgrace to human nature!!!\u201d read one.<\/p>\n<p>After his release, Sito saw the family\u2019s petition and became afraid to leave his home.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly a year after Sito\u2019s release, Miguel was shot dead. In the days following, someone tagged Sito\u2019s profile in an Instagram post about Miguel\u2019s memorial. Every time one of Rashawn\u2019s friends \u201cliked\u201d the post, Sito was notified, his aunt told me. Sito was also notified each time someone left a comment. He showed one in particular to his cousin, then to his best friend, and finally to his older brother, seemingly hoping someone would tell him he was overreacting.<\/p>\n<p>It read, \u201c1 down. 1 to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If digital media did not exist, Sito might still have been targeted. But I believe the online petition spread an erroneous account of the murder much faster and more widely than rumors whispered in school corridors could ever have. And the Instagram post only fueled those flames.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading__1\">THE RISE OF \u201cINTERNET BANGING\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cInternet banging\u201d is the term <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0747563212003779\">sociologist Desmond Upton Patton and his co-authors use<\/a> to describe the phenomenon of gang-involved youths using social media to celebrate someone\u2019s murder, for example, or to incite violence or intimidate (also known as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/alltechconsidered\/2015\/10\/07\/446300514\/when-social-media-fuels-gang-violence\">cyber banging<\/a>\u201d). It derives from \u201cgang banging,\u201d street violence typically linked to feuding between rival gangs. As a scholar who also studies gang violence, systemic racism, and police violence in U.S. cities, I\u2019ve been forced to reckon with this term and how accurately it describes Sito\u2019s lived reality.<\/p>\n<p>The term recognizes that gang dynamics, like so much else, also play out in a digital realm, where rumors, gossip, and media coverage intertwine. Increasingly, police investigators also look to digital media for evidence of gang-related crimes. Online media coverage can create and spread images of young criminal suspects long before judges or juries\u2014or defense lawyers\u2014get anywhere near their cases.<\/p>\n<p>In an era where information\u2014true or not\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/pirg.org\/edfund\/articles\/misinformation-on-social-media\/\">spreads rapidly online<\/a>, Sito\u2019s case shows how stories circulating on social platforms can criminalize individuals before any formal charge is made\u2014if it ever is. \u201cInnocent until proven guilty\u201d can seem meaningless once \u201cconvicted\u201d on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>Patton and other researchers conducted extensive research in Chicago, where active and chronic gang activity is embedded in communities. <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1461444815625949?journalCode=nmsa\">In one study<\/a>, Patton and his team focused on a two-week period in 2015 in which two well-known gang members in Chicago were murdered. The study explored how this real-world violence got amplified through <a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.engineering.columbia.edu\/fall2016\/when-words-on-twitter-trigger-real-world-violence\">social media aggression<\/a> on what was then Twitter (now X) in posts aimed at enhancing the reputation of the person making the threats.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The petition\u2019s comments, written by some of the roughly 2,000 signers, seethed with anger.
