Learn how to turn off automatic slideshows in Apple\u2019s built-in Photos app for a cleaner appearance on iPhone and iPad.<\/p>\n

\"Holding\"Holding<\/p>\n

Many sections in the Photos app display a rotating carousel of featured images and videos at the top to highlight content. It\u2019s aesthetically pleasing, but some folks don\u2019t like that tapping this area starts a full-blown slideshow complete with audio and animated transitions<\/a>. If you dislike this, you can turn off the top slideshow to make the Photos app look and work more like before<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Turn off Movie Preview in Apple Photos on iPhone and iPad<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Open the Photos app<\/strong> on your iPhone or iPad running iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later.<\/li>\n
  2. Swipe down and open an album or section within the Media Types<\/em> or Utilities<\/em> collections.<\/li>\n
  3. A slideshow at the top previews the media in the selected album or section. Tap the dual-arrow button<\/strong> in the bottom-left corner and choose View Options<\/strong> from the menu, then untick Movie Preview<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Doing so will remove the slideshow played at the top of the square photo grid.<\/p>\n

    \"Turn\"Turn<\/p>\n

    The Movie Preview setting is available in many Photos collections, including Favorites, Screenshots, Videos, Selfies, Portraits, Receipts, QR Codes, Illustrations, Recently Saved, Recently Viewed, Documents, Albums, and Shared Albums<\/a>. However, the\u00a0Hidden<\/a>, Recently Deleted, Duplicates<\/a>, and Imports collections lack this control as they don\u2019t have the top slideshow. The only exception is the People & Pets<\/a> collection which lacks this option even though it has the top slideshow. But don\u2019t worry, you\u2019ll instead use a trick mentioned right ahead.<\/p>\n

    Enable Reduce Motion just for the Photos app<\/h2>\n

    You can leverage two accessibility features in iOS and iPadOS\u2014Reduce Motion<\/a> and Per-App Settings<\/a>\u2014to turn off movie previews for all Photos collections in one fell swoop, including People & Pets. The downside is that the Reduce Motion feature will also disable all slick animations in the Photos app.<\/p>\n

    1. Open the Settings app<\/strong> on your iPhone or iPad and tap Accessibility<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    2. Scroll to the bottom and select Per-App Settings<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    3. Tap Add App<\/strong> and select Photos<\/strong> from the list.<\/li>\n
    4. Tap the added Photos<\/strong> app.<\/li>\n
    5. Select Reduce Motion<\/strong> and turn it on<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Switch to the Photos app and go inside an album or a collection like People & Pets and there should be no automatic slideshow at the top. If you hit the two-arrow icon and choose View Options, you\u2019ll notice that the Movie Preview option is absent from the menu.<\/p>\n

      \"No\"No<\/p>\n

      Again, you\u2019ll see simpler animations throughout Photos when opening albums, switching views and so forth because that\u2019s what Reduce Motion does<\/a>.<\/p>\n
