As the Model Rules of Professional Conduct provide: \u201cA lawyer is \u2026 an officer of the legal system and a public citizen having special responsibility for the quality of justice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">The rule of law is threatened when the government, for example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"n8H08c UVNKR \">\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Threatens law firms, lawyers, or legal clinics on the basis of their prior, legal governmental service;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"n8H08c UVNKR \">\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Punishes or threatens to punish people for lawful speech on matters of public concern; or,<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Ignores court orders and evades appropriate judicial oversight.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">These threats contravene the commitments of the First, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments. They are exacerbated when government penalties are administered without due process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Reasonable people may disagree about how to characterize particular incidents in the news, but we are all gravely worried that the rule of law is under severe threat. We strongly condemn efforts to undermine these basic legal norms.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The letter also expresses worry over attacks on international students. \u00a0It concludes by saying that:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0we are committed to the rule of law, to our roles in teaching and upholding the precepts of a fair and impartial legal system, and to supporting and defending [students] if you are targeted by threats or punishment for exercising your right to free expression or for your legal work.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s hard to know exactly how to respond to the unrelenting assault but Cara Horowitz said it well in the Emmett Institute\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/law.ucla.edu\/fixing-the-climate-event-rsvp-4759206?e=0ee2bd3e06\">March newsletter: <\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em> Speak out where you can. Work in community with others.
