This wee bottle of Irish Whiskey was given to us by Mrs. Alemonger as a gift with strings attached. That string is this here review, so while we appreciate that she thought enough of us during her travels in Ireland to bring us back some whiskey, we\u2019re not so sure about this strings attached business. Then again, we\u2019re always looking for an excuse to have a research session, so I guess we should just say thank you. We\u2019re such ungrateful bastards.<\/p>\n

The whiskey that we\u2019ll be discussing is from W.D. O\u2019Connell Whiskey Merchants<\/a>, an independent bottler located in County Waterford, Ireland. Here are a few words about them:<\/p>\n

We are a very different kind of whiskey maker. We do not have a distillery and we are not trying to build one. We bottle & blend the best spirits we can find, to curate a bottle and cask library that matches our adventurous spirit.<\/em><\/p>\n

In the bygone tradition of bottlers and bonders from the earliest days of Irish whiskey, we seek out the finest new-make and mature spirits from the best of Ireland\u2019s distillers. We work with peated whiskey; we bottle single grains; we cherish an all-sherry cask strength release. We are happy to re-mature whiskey in a Madeira cask, and source the best Scotch whisky Islay has to offer.<\/em><\/p>\n

After years of traveling the world earning new perspectives, the road brought us home. Burdened only with our indepedence and inspiration, we are here to make a whiskey that\u2019s never the same. Whatever road you\u2019re on, you\u2019ll find something to love with W.D. O\u2019Connell Whiskey Merchants.<\/em><\/p>\n

And here\u2019s a bit about their Bourbon & Rye Cask Series<\/a>:<\/p>\n

We kicked off our first single grain whiskey with The Bourbon & Rye Series, a reference to the casks used to give the bottle its distinct, full-bodied characteristics. It was matured in ex bourbon casks for between 10 & 12 years, and finished in ex rye casks. The Bourbon & Rye is the first of what will be a long line of single grain releases, an often overlooked, important part of Irish whiskey tradition. Bottled at 48%, non chill filtered, no added color.<\/p>\n
