Rivers are polluted. Nature is fragmented. Millions feel shut out from green spaces. And the simple joy of walking beside a stream, skipping stones, or dipping toes in wild water has become, for many, an inaccessible luxury.<\/p>\n
We are facing overlapping crises: collapsing biodiversity, rising mental health issues, climate change, and social inequality in access to nature. And yet, running like silver threads through our countryside are the rivers\u2014hidden, hemmed in, and out of bounds.<\/p>\n
It doesn\u2019t have to be this way.<\/p>\n
Imagine wandering freely along a riverbank near your home.
No tarmac. No fencing. No \u201cPRIVATE PROPERTY\u201d signs yelling you away. Just the sound of water, birds in the trees, and paths formed by curious feet.<\/p>\n
\u201cRoam the Rivers\u201d<\/strong> is a simple but bold idea: open up access along England\u2019s rivers, and rewild the space around them. Let nature and people return, together.<\/p>\n It starts with 50 metres of wild on each riverbank. A new Right to Roam<\/strong>: 50m of access on both banks of rivers at least 5m wide.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Rewilding<\/strong>: Let trees grow, or plant them where needed.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Eligibility<\/strong>: Only on farmland receiving public money\u2014public goods for public money<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Voluntary opt-in<\/strong> for sensitive or non-farmland areas.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n No concrete, no bulldozers<\/strong>\u2014just nature and informal desire lines.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n This simple idea answers many challenges at once:<\/p>\n For wildlife<\/strong>: creates corridors for species to thrive.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n For rivers<\/strong>: improves water quality, stabilises banks, and reduces flooding.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n For people<\/strong>: opens up thousands of miles of new green access.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n For mental health<\/strong>: more time in nature = healthier, happier lives.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n For farmers<\/strong>: turns marginal land into rewilded value.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n For schools and communities<\/strong>: local stewardship, learning, and pride.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Yes, landowners will object. Some access will be patchy. Not everyone will behave well.<\/p>\n But\u2026 The alternative is more of the same: closed gates, degraded rivers, and more \u201cNO ENTRY\u201d signs in a world that desperately needs reconnection.<\/p>\n This is a stepping stone towards wider access to the countryside, not the end goal. It is a way to get more people connected with nature, learning to care for it and treat it better. It earns money for landowners, increases their biodiversity, and cleans and protects the rivers on their land.<\/p>\n This isn\u2019t a radical revolution. It\u2019s a reconnection<\/em>.
