On Thursday <\/b>evening, the family and I attended a 50th birthday
\nparty.<\/b> The birthday celebrant was the eldest of Eileen\u2019s <\/b>two nieces, resulting
\nin a large extended family gathering that night. The venue for this event was
\nthe Mount Edgecumbe,<\/a><\/b><\/u> a hotel and restaurant situated in the middle of Tunbridge
\nWells Common,<\/b> but just a few minutes\u2019 walk from the town centre. It occupies a <\/b>large
\nand attractive Georgian <\/b>house, set in its own grounds, and reached by a
\nnarrow track leading down from Mount Ephraim<\/b>, at the top of the common.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Whilst
\nfamiliar with Mount Edgecumbe<\/b>, I have only visited the place on a handful
\nof occasions, the most recent one being, in 2016. <\/b>When I worked at nearby High
\nBrooms<\/b>, colleagues and I occasionally called in for a quick lunchtime snack and
\na pint, but that’s a couple of decades in the past, now. Although I can find no record of this, but I\u2019m fairly
\ncertain that the place used to be a French restaurant,<\/b> called La Galoche. “Galoche\u201d<\/i><\/b>
\nof course, is the French<\/b> term meaning an \u201c<\/i>overshoe, protecting against
\nrain, mud”. <\/em><\/b><\/span>It <\/span>e<\/span><\/span>quates to the English<\/b> word, “Wellingtons,”
\n<\/i><\/b>– sometimes known as “galoshes,\u201d<\/i><\/b> and the name likely arose due to the
\nproximity of Mount Edgecumbe\u2019s<\/b> prestigious neighbour, the Wellington Hotel.<\/b> This
\nimpressive late 19th-century<\/b> building is situated on the crest of the ridge
\noverlooking the common, and has now become a Travelodge,<\/b> offering an affordable
\noption for those seeking accommodation in Tunbridge Wells.

<\/a><\/div>\n

The Mount Edgecombe<\/b> has been in the same family ownership
\nsince 2012,<\/b> and as well as offering food and drink boasts six luxury boutique
\nbedrooms. Being just a few minutes\u2019 walk from the town centre, the Edgecombe\u2019s<\/b>
\nbar and restaurant is popular with diners, and there is also a bar area, a
\ncave, plus a garden with views across the common and town. For those who prefer
\nto drink, the place still functions as a pub and on Thursday<\/b> there
\nwas a good selection that included Harvey\u2019s Best,<\/b> a beer from Pig & Porter,<\/b>
\nplus the strangely named Pilcrow Pale<\/b> from Dorking Brewery. <\/b>Unfortunately, I
\nhad to send my pint back because it was way too hazy \u2013 I did check on Untappd
\n<\/b>first, but there was no mention of murk, such as NEIPA. <\/b>The replacement came
\nback just as bad \u2013 don\u2019t the bar staff look at these things when they\u2019re pulling
\na pint? The Harvey\u2019s<\/b> was fine, so perhaps it serves me right for being
\nadventurous!<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Or perhaps not, as Eileen\u2019s<\/b> other niece had an
\nequally hazy pint of Pig & Porter,<\/b> and this acted as the harbinger of
\nthings to come. We followed the instructions to make our menu selections
\nprior to the event, and the coordinator had organized the food orders
\naccordingly. Despite this, there was a considerable delay between the starters
\nbeing served and the arrival of the main courses. Seeing as just a handful of people
\nhad ordered starters, the wait for the main course was unnecessarily lengthy. The
\nmains arrived lukewarm, rather than piping hot and my choice of \u201cGarden
\npea and Parmesan risotto, with Parmesan shavings & pea shoots\u201d,<\/i><\/b> was
\ndefinitely missing the Parmesan! Mrs PBT\u2019s <\/b>had chosen the same dish, and her
\ncomments echoed mine, as did those of the family member sitting next to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

All of this was surprising, as the majority of Trip
\nAdvisor <\/b>reviews are full of praise for the operation. Perhaps we caught it on a bad day,
\nor possibly the fact our party was tucked away in a separate, first floor room,
\ndidn\u2019t help when it came to serving the food. The room itself was nice and
\ncosy, but wasn\u2019t easy to access via a narrow, wooden staircase. I\u2019m not sure whether
\nthere was a \u201cdumb waiter\u201d <\/i><\/b>arrangement for bringing the food up from below, but
\nif there wasn\u2019t, the poor waiting staff must have had their work cut out. Despite
\nthese issues, the staff who served us, were polite, pleasant, and
\nhelpful. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

We won\u2019t be rushing back there though \u2013 certainly not
\nto eat, but if you just fancy a drink and the weather is clement, why not take
\na walk up across Tunbridge Wells Common <\/b>to the <\/u><\/a>Mount Edgecumbe<\/span><\/b>.<\/u><\/a> \u00a0<\/span>You will need a good map I\u2019m afraid, as it\u2019s
\ndifficult to give good written directions, especially if you are heading up
\nfrom the High Street<\/b>, or the station. Furthermore, do not attempt to try and
\nfind this pub-cum-restaurant at dusk, as a friend and I did 10<\/b> or so years ago,
\nas you will inevitably get lost amongst the maze of foot ways and paths which
\ncriss-cross the common. You also run the risk of stumbling, or worse still. <\/span>falling off one of the rocky outcrops that pop up when
