They\u2019ll help you focus your message and avoid common pitfalls.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Write in the <a href=\"https:\/\/artbizsuccess.com\/1st-person-3rd-person-tell-me-the-rules\/\">first person.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a statement, after all\u2014something only you can say.<\/p>\n<p>But be mindful of overusing personal pronouns (I, me, my). You\u2019ll trim many of them during editing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Stick to the body of work you\u2019re trying to define.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Focus your statement on a single, cohesive body of work. (And, yes, you have the flexibility to write multiple statements.)<\/p>\n<p>If you try to describe different styles or directions in one statement, your language will become too general\u2014and you\u2019ll lose the specificity that makes a statement effective.<\/p>\n<p>If you work in distinct series or have more than one visual direction, write a separate statement for each. It\u2019s more work, yes\u2014but it honors the integrity of each body of work and gives your viewers a clearer experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Don\u2019t use quotes from other sources.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not in English class anymore.<\/p>\n<p>You may have been taught to begin an essay with a quote, but your artist statement should rely on your own voice. Quoting others distracts from your message.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Keep your biography separate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your bio is written in the third person.<\/p>\n<p>Your artist statement is in the first person and about the art\u2014not about you. These are two <a href=\"https:\/\/artbizsuccess.com\/1st-person-3rd-person-tell-me-the-rules\/\">distinct documents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Let your statement evolve.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This document isn\u2019t your life\u2019s treatise. You won\u2019t be defined by the words you choose forever.<\/p>\n<p>It should grow and mature alongside your work. Don\u2019t cast it in bronze and consider it done.<\/p>\n<p>Avoid treating it like a finished product you never revisit. A good statement can\u2014and should\u2014change over time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Keep it short. Really short.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most artist statements don\u2019t need to be longer than a paragraph or two, although I understand that there is a place for longer statements that enlighten.<\/p>\n<p>Always aim for brevity. If you go longer, be sure every word adds to your message. If not, cut it. (We\u2019ll get to that.)<\/p>\n<p>These guidelines will keep you grounded as you begin shaping your raw thoughts into a meaningful artist statement.<\/p>\n<p>But how will you know if what you\u2019ve written is working?<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s one simple test your statement needs to pass\u2014and it has nothing to do with perfect grammar or flowery language.
