This becomes even more important now that we\u2019re entering a new chapter in our lives: semi-retirement \/ work on own terms.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Are we ready? Expecting too much<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I believe I\/we have reasonable long-term return and inflation assumptions. Our projections include at the time of this post:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>5% annualized returns<\/strong> from a 90% equity\/stock + 10% cash\/cash equivalents portfolio (excluding my small workplace pension), and<\/li>\n<li><strong>3% sustained inflation.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Some go-go spending years from now until age 79\/80 give or take.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019ll link to my latest Financial Independence Budget update at the end of this post to support any planning assumptions you might have.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>What are your key assumptions?<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. No investment goals \/ 3. Not diversifying<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I think we should be good:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>We remain invested in our Canadian and U.S. individual stocks near-term, although I could see a near-term day in 2025 or 2026 whereby I sell off <em>all remaining\/handful of U.S. individual stocks we own<\/em> and just put all ex-Canada stocks into a low-cost ETF like my favourite to date: <strong>XAW. <\/strong>I would however keep my existing 25 Canadian stocks for income and growth for now; to avoid capital gains in our taxable accounts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>We are not focused on short-term returns since we remain 90% equities. That said, short-term, we are hopefully setting aside enough cash\/cash equivalents in 2025 to drawdown said cash in 2026 and 2027. Planning for 2028+ has not started yet but we have time to organize ourselves\u2026<\/li>\n<li>We have our long-term drawdown plan: <strong>NRT<\/strong> which means a mix of living off dividends from our Non-Registered Accounts (N) with corporation withdrawals, drawing down our RRSPs (R) over time, and therefore leaving our TFSAs (T) until the end.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Our hybrid investing approach using a mix of stocks and ETFs is not going to change:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #23292b;\">We own a number of Canadian dividend paying stocks (with some U.S. stocks for now) for income and growth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>We own a few low-cost ETFs for extra diversification.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>4. Focusing on the short-term<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Fail!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m looking forward to the short-term!<\/p>\n<p>We are looking forward to our semi-retirement years and seeing what opportunities may appear in the coming years. <em>I get what the infographic is saying though.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. Buying high and selling low<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I can\u2019t predict the future, can you?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m at a point in my investing life whereby if I have the money, sure, I will invest more but I don\u2019t have to.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Besides, when you index invest, the best price is today\u2019s price. The stock market is a forward looking tool.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"b-qt qt_409214\">\u201cSomeone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.\u201d \u2013 Warren Buffett<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>6. Trading too much<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Nothing really to worry about here. Paying too much in fees<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>No longer a problem via owning many individual stocks; no trading, I only do some periodic buying and we maintain low-cost ETFs for growth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>8. Focusing too much on taxes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In other articles on my site about investing mistakes, I\u2019ve seen some expert concerns about dividend income in a taxable account and at the same time, I\u2019ve seen the same experts say not to let the taxation tail wave the investing dog per se.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mixed messages for sure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to dividends, I continue to remain on record that dividends are not the be-all, end-all but work for us especially in our non-registered accounts in that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>any company that <em>does not pay out a dividend<\/em>, may alternatively provide other forms of shareholder returns: in the form of future capital gains, stock price increases, share buybacks, other.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This means dividends aren\u2019t everything and never have been but they can be very good.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>So I do like them. I will spend them. I hope to get more of them over time!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>9. Not reviewing regularly<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We review our portfolio every few months, in detail. We are good.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>10. Misunderstanding risk<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I like this one. I feel market volatility and risk while related are not the same.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"WaaZC\">\n<div class=\"zMgcWd dSKvsb\" data-il=\"\">\n<div data-crb-p=\"\">\n<div class=\"xFTqob\">\n<p><span data-huuid=\"17926314697415503006\"><strong>Volatility:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider this like the price swings \u2013 how much an asset <span data-huuid=\"17926314697415501355\">value fluctuates in price over time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-huuid=\"17926314697415502985\">High volatility means prices swing up and down sharply, while low volatility suggests a smoother, more predictable up and down ride.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Risk:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Possibility of losing money over time, with many specific types of risk: stock market risk, credit risk and housing market risk and so on.<\/li>\n<li>Risk can be framed as short-term or long-term, like \u201cthere is a risk of cash losing out to inflation over the next 2 years\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Volatility isn\u2019t the same as risk but they are related. Some stocks in some sectors might be highly volatile, like tech-stocks, but not all stocks nor all tech-stocks may carry the same risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong style=\"color: #23292b;\">11. Not knowing your performance<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>I monitor our portfolio performance often but I\u2019ve largely given up on detailed benchmarking since it makes no sense to obsess over benchmarking if you are not meeting your objectives.<\/p>\n<p>As long as you are meeting your goals, that\u2019s good. That\u2019s the priority.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Obsessing over a benchmark and feeling the need to meet an index because some expert said it was a good idea, is not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"tKz2ZlIIFV\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/stop-obsessing-over-benchmarking-your-portfolio\/\">Stop obsessing over benchmarking your portfolio<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cStop obsessing over benchmarking your portfolio\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/stop-obsessing-over-benchmarking-your-portfolio\/embed\/#?secret=GoL4sjll5U#?secret=tKz2ZlIIFV\" data-secret=\"tKz2ZlIIFV\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>12. Reacting to the media<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Guilty.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I mean, recent tariff wars have been terrible for many reasons. While I have not yet adjusted my portfolio due these wars, I do find all the annexing of Canada rhetoric both very problematic and very concerning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"chemNx6Tw3\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/how-to-invest-and-shop-during-trump-idiocracy\/\">How to invest and shop during Trump idiocracy<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cHow to invest and shop during Trump idiocracy\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/how-to-invest-and-shop-during-trump-idiocracy\/embed\/#?secret=JEmfv2LMU7#?secret=chemNx6Tw3\" data-secret=\"chemNx6Tw3\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>13. Forgetting about inflation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>See above.<\/p>\n<p>I use 3% higher spending per year in my projections.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Is that enough I wonder?\u00a0<\/em><em>You?<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>14. Not doing due diligence \/\u00a0<\/strong><strong>16. Working with the wrong advisor<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Visual Capitalist infographic relates to credentials, experience and a positive track record from your financial advisor. Well, I am <em>My Own Advisor.\u00a0<\/em>I only have myself to blame (or applaud) if things don\u2019t work out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>17. Staying calm when others are losing their minds.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Thinking and acting long-term when others are being short-sighted.<\/li>\n<li>Making ongoing plans that focus on months or years.<\/li>\n<li>Largely doing nothing when professionals, talking heads, and markets are tempting you to do something.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>18. Chasing yield<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Not anymore!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/weekend-reading-reader-qa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In my recent Q&amp;A, sure, I would have more income<\/a> if I didn\u2019t index invest but I like the lazy part of my portfolio for growth \u2013 which has been very good in the last 10+ years with low-cost ETFs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>19. Neglecting to start<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>No longer applicable. FWIW though, I did start investing with just $25 in my early 20s.<\/p>\n<p>My advice to any 20-something wanting to invest:<strong> just start and keep at it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>20. Not controlling what you can<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As I age, I\u2019m trying to let go of what I can\u2019t control.<\/p>\n<p>Not easy, but probably better for my health and wellness!<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the items above, here are some others collated from previous posts:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>21. Reluctance to realize capital gains<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Potentially this will be an issue for some investors as they age but I highly doubt it for me\/us.\u00a0I will absolutely realize capital gains in our taxable accounts as I get older.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>22. Drawing RRSP\/RRIF income too late<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>RRIF withdrawals <strong>are fully taxable<\/strong> so by constant deferral until the early 70s, some retirees might end up paying more lifetime tax by deferring their RRIF withdrawals.<\/p>\n<p><em>That won\u2019t be me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I definitely plan to avoid this problem by drawing down some of our RRSP\/RRIF assets starting in our 50s.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"8W2DSuyYtR\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/how-and-when-to-withdraw-from-rrsp-and-tfsa\/\">How and when to withdraw from RRSP and TFSA<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cHow and when to withdraw from RRSP and TFSA\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/how-and-when-to-withdraw-from-rrsp-and-tfsa\/embed\/#?secret=A0Yab1TIMR#?secret=8W2DSuyYtR\" data-secret=\"8W2DSuyYtR\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>23. Drawing CPP and OAS income too early<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Generally speaking, there are <em><strong>good reasons<\/strong><\/em> to take Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and\/or Old Age Security (OAS) later in life, when:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>you don\u2019t necessarily need the money to live on now \u2013 use up some personal investments before age 70;<\/li>\n<li>you have good reason to believe that you have a longer-than-average life expectancy into your 80s;<\/li>\n<li>you believe both CPP and OAS are integral to your inflation-protected, fixed-income financial well-being as you age;<\/li>\n<li>you are concerned about market risk as you age;\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>you are not concerned about leaving a large estate \u2013 you want to die with zero per se.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>24. Poor use of TFSAs (Tax Free Savings Accounts)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Another mistake at any age is the poor use of any TFSA <em>as just a savings account. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve never been a fan of the name \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/name-changes-needed-canadian-financial-accounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I prefer to call the TFSA this for us since 2013.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve used our TFSAs as investment accounts since Day 1. There is now hundreds of thousands of dollars in there.\u00a0At the time of this post, we own many Canadian dividend paying stocks inside our TFSAs along with low-cost ETF <strong>XAW <\/strong>for semi-annual distributions and growth. I don\u2019t see our overall (hybrid) approach changing anytime soon.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>25.
