\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nTorres is of Haitian-Canadian origin; her musical upbringing is of an adventurous nature with quite a <\/span>wide array of references and inspirations, but also professional contributions as a studio and stage performer. In Apr\u00e8s Coup, <\/i>a follow-up to the EP Correspondances, <\/i>the listener comes into close contact with a series of intimate improvisations recorded within a short window of time in-between touring and performing, on the edge of a lake in St-Z\u00e9non, Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\nIn these eleven compositions, we witness Torres making time, creating a space for pause, reflection and an infinite freedom of creativity. The overall sense of the album is warm, welcoming and comforting. In pieces like \u201cDuvet\u201d and \u201cLisi\u00e8re\u201d, we feel the rays of morning light crossing through Torre\u2019s studio and playing with the slowly evolving repetitive piano melodies. A space is created for imagination, and Torres\u2019s process becomes more and more transparent and lightweight.\u00a0 <\/span>Deep observation leads to a sense of gradual movement and plays with perspective in \u201cFeux Fuyants\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>and \u201cInt\u00e9rieurs\u201d as syncopated rhythms, repetitive piano and melodic sequences gradually become wider, thicker and more complex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe layering of Torres\u2019s\u00a0 <\/span>soft and velvety melodies and the improvisational movements behind pieces like \u201cReflets\u201d and \u201cPoint-Virgule\u201d demonstrate an impulse to share and shape the ineffable and the ephemeral, and yet an awareness of time and its passing is becoming more and more\u00a0 <\/span>pronounced in \u201cClessidra\u201d and \u201cCorrespondances.\u201d The album reaches its closure with \u201cGolden T-Shirts\u201d and \u201cExit\u201d, echoing Torres\u2019s own fleeting musical influences from jazz to classical\u00a0 <\/span>to contemporary and pop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe world of Apr\u00e8s Coup<\/em> is a\u00a0 <\/span>made of a vibrant and vivid cluster of soft, bright, mellow, quietly paced compositions that is familiar and surprising, soothing and uplifting. This is at least the case with Laurie Torres<\/strong>\u2019s new collection, Apr\u00e8s Coup<\/i>.
