{"id":161751,"date":"2025-03-28T13:04:01","date_gmt":"2025-03-28T13:04:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/american-history\/is-trump-capitulation-on-the-way-out\/"},"modified":"2025-03-28T13:04:01","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T13:04:01","slug":"is-trump-capitulation-on-the-way-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=161751","title":{"rendered":"Is Trump capitulation &#8220;on the way out?&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/currentpub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Waltz-1024x420.jpg\" class=\"singular-image entry-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/currentpub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Waltz.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-176799 lazyload\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/currentpub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Waltz.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-176799 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/currentpub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Waltz.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/currentpub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Waltz-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/currentpub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Waltz-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s probably wishful thinking, but The <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, Fox News, and some Republican members of the Congress may be waking up. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2025\/03\/28\/maga-pushback-trump-resistance\/\">Here<\/a> is Dana Milbank at <em>The Washington Post<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Wednesday found White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt doing what she does every other day of the week.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>This is classic Fake News,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PressSec\/status\/1904872597197578617\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">she announced<\/a>, in her briefing and in a social media post, from a news outlet that doesn\u2019t \u201ccare \u2026 about the truth\u201d and is instead \u201crunning these lies,\u201d which are \u201cabsolutely false\u201d and \u201cerroneous.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The only unusual thing this time was the diatribe was directed at the Murdoch-owned Wall Street Journal. And not just any part of the Journal but its editorial board, which has been a clarion voice of the right in the United States for 135 years. Now, it is using that voice to defend its longtime motto \u2014 \u201cfree markets and free people\u201d \u2014 by becoming a daily scold of the Trump administration for its constant violations of both.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Leavitt\u2019s particular objection was over a minor point, about whether an adviser to President Donald Trump was on the now-infamous Signal group chat while in Moscow, but the White House was no doubt stung by Wednesday\u2019s editorial overall, which criticized \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/signal-leak-houthis-pete-hegseth-mike-waltz-tulsi-gabbard-john-ratcliffe-6195ab3b?mod=hp_opin_pos_3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JD Vance\u2019s contempt for allies<\/a>\u201d and the vice president\u2019s apparent willingness \u201cto let the Houthis shut down shipping to spite the Europeans.\u201d The editorial suggested Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had been \u201ccavalier about the details of incoming military strikes\u201d and was \u201csilly\u201d to try to \u201cshift the blame for the fiasco on the journalist who was put on the chat.\u201d It suggested Trump negotiator Steve Witkoff \u201cis out of his depth in dealing with world crises,\u201d and it warned that \u201cAmerica\u2019s allies may conclude they can no longer trust the U.S. in a crisis.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>After Leavitt\u2019s rebuke, the Journal came back at the administration even harder in Thursday\u2019s paper. \u201cThe White House\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/steve-witkoff-russia-signal-chat-houthis-pete-hegseth-eb444e61\">won\u2019t let bad enough alone<\/a>\u00a0when it comes to the Signal app fiasco,\u201d it thundered. While conceding the White House\u2019s point about the adviser\u2019s phone, it blasted the administration\u2019s \u201cdefensive insistence that the chat didn\u2019t disclose any \u2018war plans,\u2019 which is a weak attempt at obfuscation.\u201d Criticizing Hegseth for trying to dismiss the flap as a hoax, it concluded that the administration \u201cseems to think it can bully its way through anything by shouting Fake News and attacking the press\u201d but should instead \u201ctake the loss.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Journal paired this with another editorial in Thursday\u2019s paper on Republicans\u2019 \u201cshock\u201d loss of a special election in a heavily Republican area of Pennsylvania. \u201cEven voters who like the GOP\u2019s policy agenda could be jolted by the impression of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/lancaster-county-special-election-pennsylvania-republicans-james-malone-josh-parsons-ken-martin-85a0644a\">chaos in Washington<\/a>, plus Mr. Trump\u2019s recent focus on retribution,\u201d it wrote, warning against following \u201cout-of-touch leaders down ideological rabbit holes.\u201d The day before, the Journal denounced the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/europe-tariffs-trade-war-donald-trump-retaliation-6b27e0dc?mod=editorials_article_pos7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dumb-and-dumber trade war<\/a>\u201d and Trump\u2019s desire to \u201csabotage America with protectionism.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We have seen entirely too much cowering and capitulation in the face of Trump\u2019s threats: by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2025\/03\/24\/trump-paul-weiss-law-firm\/\">Paul Weiss law firm<\/a>\u00a0and Columbia University,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebulwark.com\/p\/mark-zuckerberg-is-a-surrender-monkey\">by Meta<\/a>\u00a0and much of Silicon Valley, by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/02\/12\/rfk-jr-confirmation-health-care-00203851\">Big Pharma<\/a>\u00a0and other industries, by mostly supine congressional Republicans, by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (in the eyes of many on the left), and by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2025\/03\/07\/trump-eroding-press-freedom\/\">media outlets<\/a>. But in a crisis, courage can be found in unexpected places. This is why it\u2019s heartening to see some on the right (beyond the usual never-Trumpers) beginning to speak out about Trump\u2019s overreach. We might be seeing the first cracks in MAGA unity, which Trump has maintained by threats and fear.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Mississippi) and Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Alabama), who lead the Senate and House Armed Services committees, respectively, pushed back firmly against the administration\u2019s plans to restructure the military and retreat from Europe, saying they \u201cwill not accept\u201d changes without congressional approval. Wicker has also said he is directing the administration to preserve documents in the Signal group chat matter, as his committee begins an inquiry into the fiasco. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-South Dakota),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/haleytalbotcnn\/status\/1904677874172383539\">Sen. Mike Rounds<\/a>\u00a0(R-South Dakota), Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-North Dakota) and others pushed back firmly against the administration in the Signal screwup, directing them to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mkraju\/status\/1904910891113406683\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">own it and fix it<\/a>,\u201d as Thune put it. A Republican Jewish Coalition board member and GOP fundraiser called on Trump\u2019s lead peace negotiator, Steve Witkoff, to resign for his \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/jewishinsider.com\/2025\/03\/rjc-board-member-calls-for-witkoffs-dismissal-over-his-utter-incompetence\/?utm_source=threads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">utter incompetence<\/a>\u201d in dealing with Vladimir Putin and with Hamas.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Some in the MAGA echo chamber are likewise pushing back. Fox News host Laura Ingraham was skeptical of national security adviser Michael Waltz as he tried to explain how he added Atlantic editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg\u2019s number to his group chat (\u201cSomehow it gets sucked in\u201d). Fox News\u2019s chief national security correspondent said her sources told her \u201cwhat was shared may have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JenGriffinFNC\/status\/1905034953865212260\">FAR MORE sensitive<\/a>\u201d than the term \u201cwar plans\u201d conveys. Broadcaster Piers Morgan pointed out that if \u201cthis had happened on [Joe] Biden\u2019s watch, Republicans would have rightly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/piersmorgan\/status\/1904910479127912613\">gone berserk<\/a>.\u201d The (Murdoch-owned) New York Post branded the flap \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/cover\/march-25-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OPERATION OVERSHARE<\/a>,\u201d and Fox News contributor Andrew McCarthy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/26\/opinion\/trump-team-cant-argue-these-messages-werent-classified-of-course-they-were\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote a piece for the paper<\/a>\u00a0arguing: \u201cIt is undeniable, or at least it should be, that \u2018information providing advance warning that the US or its allies are preparing an attack\u2019 is to be classified as \u2018top secret.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Read the entire piece <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2025\/03\/28\/maga-pushback-trump-resistance\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s probably wishful thinking, but The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, and some Republican members of the Congress may be waking up.
