During his first presidential campaign, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-34930042\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (mocked)\">mocked<\/a> a disabled reporter by doing an over-the-top spaz impression. During his 2024 campaign, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/sep\/29\/trump-republicans-mentally-disabled-comments-harris\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (described)\">described<\/a> both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Joe Biden as \u201cmentally impaired,\u201d adding that, \u201cIf you think about it, only a mentally disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The day after moving\u00a0 back into the White House in January, the squatter issued an executive order that reeked of bigotry against disabled people. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/keeping-americans-safe-in-aviation\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (was titled)\">was titled<\/a> \u201cKeeping Americans Safe in Aviation,\u201d and it ordered the Secretary of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administrator to cease diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) recruitment initiatives, which it claims are discriminatory toward \u201c hard-working Americans who want to serve in the [Federal Aviation Administration] but are unable to do so, as they lack a requisite disability or skin color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Musk has put his vast disability ignorance on full display by repeatedly calling people who make him mad \u201cretards.\u201d On X, where Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2025\/02\/25\/elon-musk-donald-trump-disabled-people\/80112602007\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (has nearly)\">has nearly<\/a> 220 million followers, he bats around the r-word like a beach ball: In one week alone last month, at least three of his posts contained the r-word. In one post,\u00a0 Musk posted a meme of a man in the mountains blowing an Alpine horn and it says \u201cThe woke radical left are reeeeeeeeeeeeeeee tarded.\u201d Musk himself <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1893347198315749878\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (acknowledged)\">acknowledged<\/a> how many times he has used the r-word when <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TimothyDSnyder\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (he posted)\">he posted<\/a> in response to a Yale history professor\u2019s criticism of the Trump Administration, \u201cI\u2019m tempted to call this guy a retard, but I won\u2019t because I\u2019ve used that word too many times.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, the right wants a word that stings, and the r-word does the trick,\u201d journalist Justin Kirland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/mar\/03\/r-word-right-wing-rise\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (wrote)\">wrote<\/a> in <em>The Guardian<\/em> earlier this month. \u201cIts proponents cling to it <em>because<\/em> of its taboo nature, lauding it as a victory over censorship by the woke mob.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, Congress passed<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/111\/plaws\/publ256\/PLAW-111publ256.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window ( a law)\"> a law<\/a> to replace the phrase \u201cmental retardation\u201d with \u201cintellectual disability\u201d in federal laws. The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.specialolympics.org\/stories\/impact\/why-the-r-word-is-the-r-slur\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window ( bill)\"> bill<\/a> was named after Rosa Marcellino, whose mother started an anti-r-word awareness campaign a year prior because of how it had become a hurtful slur to her daughter and others with disabilities similar to hers. That\u2019s how long most people have known that using the r-word is unacceptable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Part of the problem with someone as powerful as Musk using a slur on X is the reverberations it causes online. Researchers at Montclair State University found that the use of the r-word on X <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/school-of-communication-and-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/01\/Montclair-Social-Media-Study-Musk-and-R-Word-Increase-on-X-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (tripled)\">tripled<\/a> after Musk used the word in a January post. The slur\u2019s resurgence has some disabled folks worried\u2014not just about the use of the word, but about the hostile culture that accompanies it, and the political climate that seeks to curtail their rights.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see the rise of the r-word as a gauge for how far society is willing to let people like Musk and Trump go,\u201d Kirkland wrote. \u201cAnd while I believe that in most reasonable environments, it\u2019s still very much taboo to say the word aloud, the fact that it\u2019s being said by some of the most powerful people in the world, with no recourse, says enough.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So if you ever see Elon Musk lurking in the bushes of a playground during recess, I wouldn\u2019t be too alarmed. I don\u2019t think he\u2019s a pedophile.
