In the\u00a0lead-up to the\u00a0Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit<\/a>\u00a0in Paris on 27\u201328 March,\u00a0the World Farmers\u2019 Organisation (WFO) has unveiled\u00a0its new Position on Nutrition, advocating for\u00a0farm-produced food\u00a0and\u00a0farmers empowerment to improve consumer access to fresh, healthy and nutrient-rich food.<\/p>\n

The new position builds upon the\u00a0WFO Policy on Sustainable Global Food Security and Nutrition<\/a>\u00a0(2024)\u00a0and results from\u00a0WFO\u2019s consensus-based policy development process. It reaffirms the essential role of\u00a0world farmers in ensuring global nutrition security\u00a0and calls for\u00a0actions to remove barriers that hinder their efforts.<\/p>\n

Getting Back on Track with SDG 2<\/h2>\n

The N4G Summit marks a pivotal moment, closing the\u00a0final year of the\u00a0UN Decade of Action on Nutrition<\/a>\u00a0and assessing progress towards\u00a0the\u00a0World Health Assembly (WHA) global nutrition targets<\/a>. 2025 will also serve as a checkpoint for global efforts to achieve\u00a0Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2)<\/a>\u2014ending hunger, improving food security and strengthening sustainable agriculture by 2030.<\/p>\n

Yet, the\u00a0latest food security indicators suggest the world is off track<\/a>. Malnutrition remains a pressing challenge, with\u00a0hidden hunger <\/a>affecting over two billion people particularly in low- and middle-income countries.<\/p>\n

Addressing this crisis demands a shift towards diverse, nutrient-rich, and complete diets. Farmers play a crucial role in this transformation, ensuring food security by producing nutritious food while maintaining sustainable agricultural practices.<\/p>\n

Farmers support campaigns that\u00a0promote nourishing dietary habits, combining animal- and plant-derived foods,\u00a0raising awareness about the origins of their products, and strengthening the connection between consumers, policymakers, and the agricultural world.<\/a><\/p>\n

Unlocking Farmers\u2019 Potential to Drive Global Nutrition Security<\/h2>\n

Food is more than a market commodity\u2014it is a result of skilled farm labour, essential for human health and well-being.<\/a>\u00a0However,\u00a0farmers worldwide face significant challenges, such as\u00a0unfair remuneration\u00a0and\u00a0limited access to finance,\u00a0training, and inputs needed to adopt\u00a0climate-resilient and biodiversity-friendly practices.\u00a0Removing these barriers and supporting farmers\u2014especially family farmers, women, and youth\u2014is crucial to building sustainable food systems and ensuring global nutrition security.<\/p>\n

\u201cWFO remains committed to advocating for\u00a0urgent action on food insecurity and malnutrition while calling for recognition of the indispensable role of farmers as leaders in the fight against hunger and stewards of our environment,\u201d stated\u00a0Arnold Puech d\u2019Alissac, WFO\u2019s President.<\/p>\n

The newly released\u00a0WFO Position on Nutrition\u00a0outlines key recommendations to empower farmers in driving food systems to a nutrition-secure future for all.<\/p>\n

World farmers stand ready to\u00a0collaborate with all stakeholders who recognise the value of farm labour\u00a0and the priority of\u00a0transitioning away from food models that undermine human health\u00a0and\u00a0ignore food habits and the needs of populations.<\/p>\n
