{"id":159817,"date":"2025-03-27T14:14:28","date_gmt":"2025-03-27T14:14:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/finance\/european-airlines-urge-eu-to-pull-back-on-climate-policies\/"},"modified":"2025-03-27T14:14:28","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T14:14:28","slug":"european-airlines-urge-eu-to-pull-back-on-climate-policies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=159817","title":{"rendered":"European airlines urge EU to pull back on climate policies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Stay informed with free updates<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Simply sign up to the <!-- -->Airlines<!-- --> myFT Digest &#8212; delivered directly to your inbox.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=f5e59ab2-349b-42e5-ba3f-473f92684449&amp;concept-id=d83d0667-fb03-477f-8551-7e72f6234c41\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Europe\u2019s airlines have called on the EU to cut back on its environmental rules, in a significant shift in tone for an industry struggling to decarbonise. <\/p>\n<p>The chief executives of four of the region\u2019s biggest carriers, including Ryanair and International Airlines Group, which owns British Airways, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/european-union\" data-trackable=\"link\">EU<\/a> carbon pricing rules for aviation should be eased and brought in line with a cheaper, global standard. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to cut and revise EU regulations quickly,\u201d said Carsten Spohr, Lufthansa chief executive.<\/p>\n<p>The executives, who also included the head of Air France-KLM and spoke on behalf of 17 airlines, called on the bloc to review a rule that requires fuel suppliers at airports to provide a portion of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for departing flights.<\/p>\n<p>Brussels has come under pressure from business groups to cut back its sustainability agenda to help European companies become more competitive, particularly as President Donald Trump launches a deregulation drive in the US. <\/p>\n<p>The bloc\u2019s economic competitiveness tsar last month suggested the EU was prepared to water down some of its green policies to placate the bloc\u2019s industry. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a meeting of trade body Airlines for Europe (A4E) in Brussels, the chief executives insisted they remained committed to a long-term target of contributing net zero new carbon emissions to the atmosphere by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>However, they said the EU should delay rules that require fuel companies to provide airlines with an increasing amount of \u201csustainable aviation fuel\u201d each year. The requirement is for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/airlines\" data-trackable=\"link\">airlines<\/a> to use 2 per cent this year, and rises to 6 per cent by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>These fuels \u2014 which are typically made from organic material, such as used cooking oil or crops \u2014 can reduce the net carbon emissions from flying by about 70 per cent. O\u2019Leary said the UK government \u201cwon\u2019t have any choice\u201d but to water this down. <\/p>\n<p>He added that bringing the EU Emissions Trading Scheme into line with the global aviation industry\u2019s Corsia system, which charges a far lower price to pollute than the EU system, would \u201ccreate a level playing field for consumers here in Europe\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, a 2021 unpublished EU report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/296121c6-1af5-4ef4-b674-c3389b6de33c\" data-trackable=\"link\">seen by the Financial Times<\/a>, found that Corsia risked being ineffective, poorly enforced and \u201cundermining\u201d the EU\u2019s climate policies.<\/p>\n<p>Diane Vitry, aviation director of Transport and Environment, an environmental NGO, said airlines were \u201cjumping on an anti-green trend which will disappoint customers who are trying more and more to fly green\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She added that Corsia was \u201csuch a weak system that effectively provides cheap offsets,\u00a0which does not put an adequate price on CO\u2082\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission said it considered the current SAF targets to be \u201crealistic and feasible\u201d, pointing out they had been jointly agreed between the commission and industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have reaffirmed to stay the course of the European Green Deal and will therefore stick to these targets,\u201d the commission said. \u201cThe focus is now on their implementation, and we will offer support where needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Spohr said EU consumers deserved a more \u201chonest\u201d debate about decarbonisation, particularly as fuel companies have cut back on the production of some renewable fuels and Airbus has delayed its ambitions for the introduction of a hydrogen-powered aircraft. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings are changing in the debate and in terms of engineering decisions\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009engineers are stopping work on hydrogen and have moved from SAF production to fossil fuel production that will have an impact on reaching net zero.
