This intense marketing rivalry, which spanned from <strong>1982 to 1985<\/strong>, was primarily a fight for the <strong>#2 spot in the U.S. fast-food industry<\/strong>, as McDonald\u2019s firmly held the top position.<\/p>\n<p><em>This post is a shortened version of the \u201cBurger Wars\u201d chapter from my book, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4hLMhHW\" class=\"broken_link\">All About the Burger<\/a><\/strong>: A History of America\u2019s Sandwich.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-origin-of-the-burger-wars\"><strong>The Origin of the Burger Wars<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The roots of the Burger Wars trace back to <strong>1977<\/strong> when <strong>Burger King<\/strong> poached Don Smith, a <strong>top McDonald\u2019s executive<\/strong>. Smith\u2019s <strong>\u201cOperation Phoenix\u201d<\/strong> set the stage for BK\u2019s aggressive rivalry with McDonald\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>However, after Smith\u2019s departure in <strong>1980<\/strong>, Burger King struggled with declining sales, prompting <strong>Norman E. These commercials aggressively compared BK\u2019s <strong>flame-broiled burgers<\/strong> to McDonald\u2019s <strong>fried patties<\/strong>, highlighting key selling points:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u201cA Very Big Message\u201d Commercial:<\/strong> Emphasized that McDonald\u2019s used <strong>20% less meat<\/strong> than Burger King.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cBroiling vs. Frying\u201d Commercial:<\/strong> Stressed that consumers preferred flame-broiled burgers over fried ones <strong>3 to 1<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cA Friendly Wager\u201d Commercial:<\/strong> Challenged viewers to call friends and confirm that most people prefer BK\u2019s \u201cHave it Your Way\u201d customization.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cA Very Important Message\u201d Commercial:<\/strong> Declared that <strong>Whopper beat the Big Mac<\/strong> and <strong>Wendy\u2019s Single<\/strong> in taste tests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mcdonald-s-and-wendy-s-strike-back\"><strong>McDonald\u2019s and Wendy\u2019s Strike Back<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>McDonald\u2019s took legal action to <strong>block the commercials<\/strong>, arguing that Burger King\u2019s claims were misleading.
