No, I\u2019m not trying to be dramatic, it\u2019s the truth. You cause havoc because GTM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/google-tag-manager-data-model\/\">modifies the native <code>push()<\/code> method<\/a> that all Arrays have, adding stuff of little importance such as <strong>a listener which fires tags when an \u2018event\u2019 key is pushed!<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>By redefining <code>dataLayer<\/code> your tags will no longer fire. Oops!<\/p>\n<p>But hey, we\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/tag-manager\/devguide\">often instructed<\/a> to use variable assignment when creating <code>dataLayer<\/code> <em>before<\/em> the container snippet. Right? Well, yes, that\u2019s what we\u2019re instructed to do but that\u2019s not necessarily the best practice. Having just one declaration there works like a charm, but what about:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-html\" data-lang=\"html\">  script&gt;\n    dataLayer = [{\n      <span style=\"color:#a50\">'businessCriticalVar'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#a50\">'businessCriticalVal'<\/span>\n    }];\n  <span style=\"color:#1e90ff;font-weight:bold\">script<\/span>&gt;\n  ... some other code ...\n  script&gt;\n    dataLayer = [{\n      <span style=\"color:#a50\">'anotherCriticalVar'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#a50\">'anotherCriticalVal'<\/span>\n    }];\n  <span style=\"color:#1e90ff;font-weight:bold\">script<\/span>&gt;\n<span style=\"color:#1e90ff;font-weight:bold\">head<\/span>&gt;\nbody&gt;\n<span style=\"color:#aaa;font-style:italic\"><!-- GTM Container Snippet --><\/span><\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>Well, you might have guessed it. The second assignment overwrites the first one, and <code>dataLayer<\/code> only has <strong>anotherCriticalVar<\/strong> available for the benefit of your tags.<\/p>\n<p>So how to avoid this?<\/p>\n<p>Simple: use <strong>only<\/strong> <code>push()<\/code> when interacting with <code>dataLayer<\/code>. That way you\u2019ll never overwrite anything in the Array, you\u2019ll just add new stuff to the end.<\/p>\n<p>In GTM tags (Custom HTML, for example), you can just go ahead and use <code>dataLayer.push()<\/code>, since you can be 100 % sure that <code>dataLayer<\/code> is an Array with a <code>push()<\/code> function (the container snippet takes care of this for you). But when you\u2019re working on the page template, where it\u2019s not necessarily a given that <code>dataLayer<\/code> has been defined as an Array, always use the following syntax to safeguard against problems:<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-javascript\" data-lang=\"javascript\"><span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer = <span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer || [];\n<span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer.push({\n  <span style=\"color:#a50\">'someVar'<\/span> : <span style=\"color:#a50\">'someVal'<\/span>\n});\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>The first line basically checks if a global variable called <code>dataLayer<\/code> has already been declared. If it has, it\u2019s left alone and execution proceeds to the <code>push()<\/code> block. If, however, <code>dataLayer<\/code> has NOT been defined, the first line then assigns a new, empty Array to it. This ensures that the following <code>push()<\/code> will always work.<\/p>\n<p>So here\u2019s the recap:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p><strong>When working on the page template, always check whether or not <code>dataLayer<\/code> has been defined, and initialize it as a new Array if necessary<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Always, ALWAYS, use <code>push()<\/code> when interacting with <code>dataLayer<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>DISCLAIMER:<br \/>\nThe <code>window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];<\/code> fails if <code>dataLayer<\/code> HAS been defined but not as an Array.
