Nice reminder of how empty corporate \u201czero deforestation\u201d promises can be.<\/p>\n<p>RAN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/RAN_Orangutan_Capital_Under_Siege_2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest satellite investigation<\/a> found illegal oil palm plantations inside a protected area on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia that\u2019s famous for its orangutans. This area, the Rawa Singkil Wildlife Reserve, locks away gigatons of carbon in its swampy peat forests.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2014, RAN has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/leuser-watch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documented<\/a> illegal oil palm expansion in the reserve and its encompassing Leuser Ecosystem\u2014a jewel in the crown of Sumatra\u2019s last standing rainforests and home to the only coexisting rhinos, elephants, orangutans, and tigers in the wild.<\/p>\n<p>Oil palm has felled over half of Sumatra\u2019s rainforests in just a few decades as producers keep pace with global demand for consumer goods, including snack foods and cosmetics. But the vast and remote Leuser Ecosystem has resisted deforestation\u2014until recently.<\/p>\n<p>This deforestation is increasing at a rapid pace, even as \u201czero deforestation\u201d pledges become the norm among the world\u2019s biggest palm oil traders, consumer goods companies, and banks.<\/p>\n<p>Oreo-maker Mondel\u0113z and Top Ramen-maker Nissin Foods could make a significant dent in this illicit trade by simply enforcing their own zero deforestation policies.<\/p>\n<p>If only they could be reached for comment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MR7A8712.jpg\" class=\"ss-hidden-pin-image\" alt=\"\" data-pin-url=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/the-understory\/multinationals-silent-on-destruction-of-orangutan-habitat\/\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MR7A8712.jpg\" data-pin-description=\"Multinationals silent on destruction of prime orangutan habitat\"\/>\t\t<\/div>\n<p><!-- .entry-content --><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<!-- .entry-footer -->\n\t<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oreo, Top Ramen ignore repeated evidence of complicity in illegal deforestation.
