{"id":156121,"date":"2025-03-25T17:27:11","date_gmt":"2025-03-25T17:27:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/alabama\/ag-marshall-supports-federal-push-to-reopen-coal-plants\/"},"modified":"2025-03-25T17:27:11","modified_gmt":"2025-03-25T17:27:11","slug":"ag-marshall-supports-federal-push-to-reopen-coal-plants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=156121","title":{"rendered":"AG Marshall supports federal push to reopen coal plants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Earlier this month, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum said during an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-03-10\/us-eyes-restarting-closed-coal-plants-interior-secretary-says\">Bloomberg Television<\/a> that \u201cwe\u2019ve got to keep every coal plant open and if there had been units at a coal plant that have been shut down, we need to bring those back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The secretary also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/ceraweek-us-can-slash-20-30-regulation-boost-energy-interior-secretary-says-2025-03-12\/\">reportedly told<\/a> energy executives that the Trump administration would be supportive of massively increasing drilling and mining on federally owned land.<\/p>\n<p>Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall signed onto an open letter to Burgum last Thursday praising the secretary\u2019s statement. The letter forcefully argued coal will be a necessary part of addressing the American \u201cenergy crisis\u201d and developing artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Signed by a total of 23 state attorneys general including Marshall, the letter asserts that \u201cAmerica needs coal power to succeed.\u201d Citing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/electricity-supply-bottleneck-us-ai-dominance\">recent study<\/a> published by the Center for Strategic and International Studies and supported by OpenAI, the attorneys general argue that only \u201cincreased coal-fired energy production\u201d can help produce enough energy to keep America ahead of China in the development of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom artificial intelligence to manufacturing, we need coal-fired power to remain globally competitive, support industries like steel and aluminum, and protect our national security,\u201d Marshall stated in a Monday press release. \u201cWithout coal, we risk losing our technological edge and the prosperity that comes with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time to unleash the power of American coal and ensure energy security for the future of our country,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Neither the letter or Marshall\u2019s statement addresses the potential difficulties or expenses of expanding coal-based energy production.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>While the Inflation Reduction Act, a major piece of legislation passed during the Biden administration, authorized several programs meant to accelerate the transition away from coal toward more sustainable sources of energy, as a source of energy coal has been on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/us-energy-facts\/\">decline for decades<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One likely contributing factor is that modern coal plants are more expensive per megawatt-hour than nuclear, geothermal and every listed type of renewable energy save offshore wind according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/aeo\/electricity_generation\/pdf\/AEO2023_LCOE_report.pdf\">2023 report,<\/a> \u201cLevelized Costs of New Generation Resources in the Annual Energy Outlook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The use of coal can also be a significant contributor to pollution, due to both the pollution caused by actually burning coal and the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/21032025\/alabama-officials-say-methane-likely-caused-fatal-home-explosion-above-coal-mine\/\">sometimes dangerous<\/a> methane in coal mines.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/coal\/how-much-coal-is-left.php\">Another study<\/a> from the EIA found that while the U.S. still has \u201cabout 250 billion short tons\u201d of recoverable coal reserves, it only has around 20 years worth of reserves at currently producing mines. So considerably increasing the share of American energy produced by burning coal would likely necessitate opening, or perhaps in some cases re-opening, coal mines.<\/p>\n<p>Despite noting that preventing coal plants from closing down may help alleviate energy costs in the short-run, the CSIS report that the AGs\u2019 letter cites actually concluded that \u201cthe delayed coal retirement strategy buys time but shifts the challenge to the future.\u201d The report\u2019s authors specifically suggested\u00a0 \u201cnuclear, gas, solar, storage or geothermal\u201d technologies as potential places to focus moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>Marshall\u2019s office did not respond to APR\u2019s request for more information about the AG\u2019s stance on opening new coal mines before the publication of this article.
