{"id":155928,"date":"2025-03-25T15:14:11","date_gmt":"2025-03-25T15:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/finance\/donald-trump-defends-national-security-adviser-over-chat-breach\/"},"modified":"2025-03-25T15:14:11","modified_gmt":"2025-03-25T15:14:11","slug":"donald-trump-defends-national-security-adviser-over-chat-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=155928","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump defends national security adviser over chat breach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\">Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=55bbb0f0-c5f1-4270-8744-dfb9a9ff53eb&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Donald Trump has defended Mike Waltz, his national security adviser, as the White House sought to stem a growing scandal over revelations that top officials had discussed sensitive US military operations in Yemen on a Signal group chat. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking to NBC News on Tuesday, the US president said \u201cMichael Waltz has learned a lesson, and he\u2019s a good man\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Trump added that the Signal chat about this month\u2019s air strikes on the Houthis, which Waltz accidentally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ddb1a6b7-e69c-4d52-802d-5b3f800acdb0\" data-trackable=\"link\">shared with a journalist<\/a>, were the \u201conly glitch in two months, and it turned out not to be a serious one\u201d. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/stream\/c8027584-7709-40c5-85e3-b44d908899cc\" data-trackable=\"link\">Waltz<\/a> is facing growing pressure to step down as a result of the Signal group chat scandal, though Pete Hegseth, the defence secretary, has also come under fire for sharing detailed plans about the operation against the Houthis on the chat. <\/p>\n<p>JD Vance, the US vice-president, was another participant in the Signal chat, and argued that the military strikes were a \u201cmistake\u201d because they amounted to a bailout of Europe. <\/p>\n<p>The furore over the exchange has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ba6a6ef5-7b53-41a3-87ff-413812719057\" data-trackable=\"link\">shocked Washington<\/a> and embarrassed the Trump administration because it shed light on the sloppiness with which top officials were discussing highly sensitive information about US national security on an unofficial messaging platform. <\/p>\n<p>But it is unclear whether the US law enforcement agencies will investigate the breach, or if anyone within the administration will be held accountable. <\/p>\n<aside aria-labelledby=\"aside-label\" class=\"n-content-recommended--single-story n-content-recommended--inset\" data-component=\"recommended\">\n<p class=\"n-content-recommended__title\">Recommended<\/p>\n<div class=\"o-teaser o-teaser--article o-teaser--small o-teaser--stacked o-teaser--has-image js-teaser\" data-id=\"ba6a6ef5-7b53-41a3-87ff-413812719057\">\n<div class=\"o-teaser__image-container js-teaser-image-container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ba6a6ef5-7b53-41a3-87ff-413812719057\" data-trackable=\"image-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"o-teaser__image-placeholder\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2289\/1288\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"o-teaser__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ft.com%2F__origami%2Fservice%2Fimage%2Fv2%2Fimages%2Fraw%2Fhttps%253A%252F%252Fd1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net%252Fproduction%252Fe0bfba0a-aa8b-417b-a815-55b0158e65e2.jpg%3Fsource%3Dnext-article%26fit%3Dscale-down%26quality%3Dhighest%26width%3D700%26dpr%3D1?source=next&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;dpr=2&amp;width=240\" alt=\"Vice-president JD Vance, defence secretary Pete Hegseth and national security adviser Mike Waltz\"\/><\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>On Tuesday morning, senior US intelligence officials, including director of national intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, CIA director John Ratcliffe and FBI head Kash Patel, were grilled by Democrats at the Senate intelligence committee over the affair. <\/p>\n<p>Democrat Mark Warner, vice-chair of the committee, said the incident was \u201cone more example of\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009sloppy, careless, incompetent behaviour, particularly towards classified information\u201d. \u201cThis is not a one-off, or a first-time error,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also just mind-boggling to me that all of these senior folks were on this line and nobody\u00a0bothered to even check [who else was on the line],\u201d he said. \u201cSecurity hygiene 1.0.1.\u00a0Who are all the names? Who are they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cIf this was the case of a military officer or an intelligence officer and they had this kind of behaviour they would be fired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabbard played down the incident. \u201cThere was no classified information in that Signal group chat,\u201d she told senators.<\/p>\n<p>That was echoed by Ratcliffe. \u201cMy communications\u2009.\u2009.\u2009. in a Signal message group were entirely permissible and lawful and did not include classified information,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is permissible to use [Signal] to communicate and co-ordinate for work purposes, provided\u2009.\u2009.\u2009. that any decisions that are made are also recorded through formal channels,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The White House has sought to dismiss the brewing scandal.
