Canada is opening new permanent residency (PR) pathways for construction workers, a move aimed at tackling labor shortages and supporting the country\u2019s growing housing needs. The initiative, announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), includes a significant provision: out-of-status construction workers may also be eligible to apply.<\/p>\n
Many out-of-status construction workers have been living and working in Canada for years, helping to build much-needed housing. Under this new pathway, they will now have the opportunity to regularize their status and stay in the country legally. According to the statement released<\/a> by the IRCC, \u201cThese undocumented migrants are already living and working in Canada, and are contributing to the sector, and this pathway will keep them here legally so that they can continue to build the homes our economy and communities need with the proper protections.\u201d<\/p>\n In addition to supporting out-of-status workers, the government is also making it easier for foreign apprentices to complete their training in Canada. In the same news release, the IRCC stated, \u201cto support foreign apprentices in construction programs\u00a0and\u00a0to address the\u00a0current\u00a0labour\u00a0market needs in the construction sector,\u00a0we\u00a0are also\u00a0introducing\u00a0a\u00a0temporary measure\u00a0to\u00a0allow\u00a0foreign apprentices\u00a0to complete their studies without a study permit,\u00a0effective today<\/a>.\u00a0By removing this administrative barrier,\u00a0apprentices\u00a0will be able\u00a0to gain\u00a0the\u00a0valuable skills\u00a0they need\u00a0to\u00a0contribute to infrastructure projects\u00a0more quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n The new immigration measures reflect Canada\u2019s urgent need for skilled labor to meet the country\u2019s growing housing demands.
