My family cherishes the memory of our grandmother, “Momu” but I noticed that this old photograph of her has started to fade. As I get older, there is a fear that her memory will be lost to future generations, so I painted this small oil sketch on our uncle’s boat on one of her many trips to Cuba. She Loved Cuba in the early 1950s which I understand was a very glamorous time. And she was a very glamorous lady, but she was also a wonderful grandmother. Widowed when she was about 55, she had the time to spend a month each year with her 3 daughters’ families, and she taught us “How to be a Grandmother.” First, give each child your undivided attention. Listen to what they care about no matter how boring. Find alone time with each child. Ask questions and tell them stories. Above all, laugh at their jokes! Second, “How to be a Good Guest.” (A month is a long time to disrupt the family) First, take on a helpful project, she sewed curtains and mended clothes; I cook for the family when I come to visit. Third, after dinner, and cleanup, disappear. Let the family have their own time together. Finally, Keep your mouth shut! This is the hardest one to follow and I am still working on it. Hopefully, progress without perfection will count. Because old photos fade I might have to start a project of other loved ones who are now gone. Oh Dear!
