Some parenting experts and websites suggest starting it with 3-6-month-olds. Some even suggest introducing it to newborns.<\/p>\n<p>However, starting independent play around 6-months of age may be easiest. By then, your baby might be able to hold their head up and manipulate a toy on their own (even if they aren\u2019t yet mobile).<\/p>\n<p>If you have a toddler and haven\u2019t introduced independent playtime yet, there\u2019s no time like the present! You can introduce it at any age.<\/p>\n<h4>How long should my baby play independently?<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/2551\/3954\/files\/jelleke-vanooteghem-bNUGJD3gO94-unsplash_480x480.jpg?v=1689011053\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Again\u2014it depends on who you ask! For instance, some parenting websites say 6-month-olds may be able to play by themselves for ~5 minutes. Others say that toddlers\u2019 attention spans are 5 minutes! Because the advice varies widely\u2014and because children vary widely\u2014a good starting point for any age is: begin with a few minutes of independent playtime and see how it goes. You can always add more!<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Parents.com suggests working up to the following:<br \/>6-months: 5 minutes<br \/>12-months: 15 minutes<br \/>18-months: 20 minutes <br \/>2 years: 30 minutes<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4>\n<br \/>I haven\u2019t introduced independent playtime yet. How do I start?<\/h4>\n<p>Take your child to a small, child-proofed room, area, or playpen and introduce an activity with their favorite toys or books. Then after a few minutes, move a few feet away while offering occasional words of encouragement and acknowledgement if they need it. Gradually, as they get used to independent playtime\u2014and as they get older\u2014you can move further away. (And of course, when your children are much older\u2014like preschool age\u2014you can leave them alone in a room or space for a short period of time. But at this young age\u20142 years and younger\u2014you won\u2019t want to leave them unattended.)<\/p>\n<p>If your child stops playing when you move away, return to them and play with them again\u2014but only for a few seconds. Then remove yourself again. Repeat as many times as you need. Many children become more interested in their toys\/activities than watching you come and go. <\/p>\n<p>And if they start crying when you stop playing, try offering words of encouragement and comfort instead of immediately returning to the play area. Reassure them that you\u2019re nearby and are just giving them space to play.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/2551\/3954\/files\/ryan-fields-Xz7MMD5tZwA-unsplash_480x480.jpg?v=1689011104\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"\/> <\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Tips for Success!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Be patient with your child.<\/strong> Your child\u2019s temperament and day-to-day (i.e., how much sleep they got; if they\u2019re sick; if they\u2019re going through a growth spurt) are going to influence how playtime goes. That\u2019s normal! Start with small amounts of alone time and work up from there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Develop a schedule for independent play and stick with it.<\/strong> This way, the child will learn to expect that routine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Offer different toys\/books on different days.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But also limit the number of toys available!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoid overstimulating toys.<\/strong> Put away the ones that light up, sing, and move around, and instead offer simple, passive toys (blocks, dolls, stuffed animals, boxes, books, art materials, play furniture) that let children stimulate themselves and be creative about their playtime.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/2551\/3954\/files\/daiga-ellaby-ldOzKqZa6wg-unsplash_480x480.jpg?v=1689011128\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoid screentime as a part of independent play.<\/strong> We want to go \u2018old school\u2019 here and provide toys that let the child, not the game\/movie\/TV program, take the lead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use verbal encouragement at the start of playtime to set expectations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOK, now it\u2019s playtime! I\u2019ll be sitting (reading, etc.) over there, and you can tell me about your playtime when you\u2019re done!\u201d<br \/>\u201cOK, I\u2019m going to leave you alone for 10 minutes. I\u2019ll even set a timer if you want. I can\u2019t wait to hear what you do!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frame it positively (i.e., don\u2019t say: \u201cI need time away from you.\u201d Or \u201cI\u2019m busy. Go play by yourself.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p><strong>During playtime, use verbal encouragement only if they need it.<\/strong> Let them initiate your involvement. Avoid praise. It\u2019s playtime, not a test, so children don\u2019t need to be told, \u201cYou\u2019re doing such a great job.\u201d If anything, you can ask questions about what\u2019s going on in their imaginary world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Make sure your baby gets your undivided attention at other times throughout the day.<\/strong> Then, they\u2019ll be more likely to embrace the short amounts of alone time they\u2019re given.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/2551\/3954\/files\/Group_324_480x480.png?v=1688859677\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"\/><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Last tip!<\/strong> Pick a time for play when your child isn\u2019t too tired or hungry.
