Life is busy–especially with kids! Every family is a bit different based on their traditions as well as their professions and family structure. I don’t know if there is any “typical” family anymore! But one thing we can all do to bring our families closer together is to eat together.

More and more experts say that simply sitting down together as a family at least once a week promotes not only family communication but also helps kids feel more connected to the older generation and teaches better eating habits.

We don’t have a lot of options for fast food in our small rural town. Until recently, we didn’t even have a cafe in town! We could drive 20 miles to find a Pizza Hut or 30 miles for a wider variety of restaurants, but when our kids were young, we chose to save money and eat at home. I learned to cook in a crockpot and therefore we had supper waiting for us when we came in from the farm. We sat down with our five kids and talked about what happened that day and what was coming up the next week. We didn’t know we were helping our kids learn to talk to adults. We didn’t realize this would help teach our kids about self-worth and respect. But we enjoyed 24 years of eating supper with everyone around the table, talking and being a part of our family supper.

I’m not going to tell you I’m a good cook–but luckily that isn’t the most important part of cooking for teenagers! I cook what my family likes and what they will eat. Sometimes that means homemade pizza and sometimes that is carry-out. But what matters is that we were together as often as possible and we sat down together. A great resource for recipes is the Sunday Supper Movement website–there are fancy recipes and stick-to-your-ribs recipes. There are recipes for big families and small families and the best of it all is they are real recipes compiled and created by real moms!

My family is so important to me. That is why I’m so excited about the Sunday Supper movement! January 2016 is the first ever National Sunday Supper Month and you can TAKE THE PLEDGE to eat together at least once a week as a family. Take this pledge and join the movement to make time in our busy lives to sit down with our families and focus on them. The key words may be “Make the Time” and put our families on the priority list. I don’t think you will ever regret taking more time with your kids!
