I stared at the text while I stood ankle-deep in a kiddie pool, orange juice in hand. <\/p>\n

I was at a kids\u2019 birthday party. The sender? A farmer who lives 20 clicks from me.<\/p>\n

Then Liz came out with her party hat on and said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s an out-of-control fire near the farm \u2026 and the wind is blowing in the wrong<\/em> direction.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nervously sipped my juice while my family gave me my marching orders: <\/p>\n

I was told to go home and collect a stuffed cheetah, two teddy bears, and a prized poster of Kysaiah \u2018Kozzy\u2019 Pickett. Oh, and the passports. (\u201cDont\u2019 forget the the damn passports!\u201d)<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll be honest, as I drove back to the farm I was slightly freaked out. <\/p>\n

Still, a lot of people all over Australia have been feeling this way lately: with the cyclone, floods and fires (thankfully the fire near our place was eventually contained). And even if you haven\u2019t \u2013 you sure as hell have been burned by your insurer. As one Barefooter wrote to me recently:<\/p>\n

\u201cOur home Insurance has tripled \u2013 from $400 per month to over $1,200. Why is no one talking about this?! You can’t even get a mortgage without having insurance, so there is no way out!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Sheizenhowzen! <\/p>\n

Over a third of insurers have increased prices by more than 15% in the last year (the worst hikers according to CHOICE were Kogan, RAC and Honey). <\/p>\n

Now that doesn\u2019t sound too<\/em> bad right?<\/p>\n

Well, hold my OJ:  <\/p>\n

In a recent \u2018shadow shop\u2019, CHOICE found the biggest price difference between identical home and contents insurance policies wasn\u2019t double or even triple \u2026 it was TWENTY TIMES.<\/p>\n

Blitzenschnauzer!<\/p>\n

Okay, so here\u2019s what I want you to do.<\/p>\n

First, load up Mr Inbetween<\/em> on Binge (thank me later), grab your preferred brew, get your phone out of your pocket, and take prime position on the La-Z-Boy. We\u2019re going to do some multi-tasking.<\/p>\n

1. Grab your home and contents policy (or just contents if you\u2019re renting) and find your \u2018sum insured\u2019 \u2013 that\u2019s the total amount you\u2019re covered for. Write it down.<\/p>\n

2. Next, google three quotes. <\/p>\n

3. Right-yo, it\u2019s time to get off the recliner. Grab your phone and film your place like you\u2019re making a true-crime doco \u2013 open cupboards, dig through drawers, and don\u2019t forget the garage. If you ever need to claim, this footage will be worth its weight in gold.<\/p>\n

4. Then walk outside and act like a meth-head casing the joint: Do you have a yappy dog? Deadbolts on the door? Security cameras? Note down anything you\u2019ve done to Fort Knox your home.<\/p>\n

5. Then call your insurer and follow this script:<\/p>\n

You:<\/strong> \u201cHi, my name is [Your Name] and I\u2019m really struggling to afford my home and contents insurance policy. I\u2019d like to discuss how we can reduce my premium. My policy number is XYZ.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

Insurer:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019d be happy to help.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

<\/em>You:<\/strong> \u201cAfter a lot of research, I\u2019ve found comparable coverage from other insurers at more competitive rates. Additionally, I\u2019ve implemented several safety measures in my home, such as [consult your meth-head list]. Given these factors, I\u2019m seeking a reassessment of my premium.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

Insurer:<\/strong> \u201cLet me review your policy and see what adjustments we can make.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cue condescending loop of a voiceover woman saying \u201cYour call is important to us”.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/em><\/span>Insurer:<\/strong> \u201cThank you for your patience. Based on the information provided, we can offer a premium reduction of [amount].\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

You:<\/strong> \u201cI appreciate that. However, considering the competitive quotes I\u2019ve received, plus the safety enhancements I\u2019ve made, I believe there\u2019s room for a more substantial reduction. Additionally, I\u2019m willing to increase my excess, which should further lower my premium by at least an additional 10%.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/span>Insurer:<\/strong> \u201cI understand. Let me see what more we can do.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

James Blunt\u2019s \u201cYou\u2019re Beautiful\u201d plays.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/em><\/span>Insurer:<\/strong> \u201cAfter further review, we can offer an additional discount, bringing your new premium to [new amount].\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

You:<\/strong> \u201cNow we\u2019re talking. Send me that in writing and we\u2019re good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Insurer:<\/strong> \u201cDone! Anything else?\u201d<\/p>\n

You:<\/strong> \u201cYes, please cancel my auto-renew immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

Insurer:<\/strong> \u201cAre you sure? That\u2019s how we screw you next year.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the time it takes you to watch the first episode of Mr Inbetween<\/em>, you should be able to save yourself hundreds and potentially thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s only one thing left to do. My final instruction is to send me an email at scott@barefootinvestor.com<\/a> and tell me how much you saved. I\u2019ll report back next week. <\/p>\n
