[250 years
\nago this past Saturday, Patrick Henry delivered his \u201cGive me liberty or
\ngive me death<\/a>!\u201d speech to the
\nVirginia Assembly<\/a>. So this week I\u2019ll AmericanStudy that and four other
\npatriotic speeches!]<\/p>\n

For the
\nanniversary of Henry\u2019s speech, I wanted to share my three paragraphs on it at
\nthe start of Chapter 1 of Of
\nThee I Sing<\/a><\/i>:<\/span><\/p>\n

On March 23rd,
\n1775, a 38-year old attorney, planter, and delegate to the Vir[1]<\/span><\/span>ginia
\nHouse of Burgesses named Patrick Henry (1736\u20131799) rose to give a speech at the
\nSecond Virginia Convention. That convention, held from March 20th<\/sup>\u201323rd<\/sup>
\nat St. John\u2019s Episcopal Church in Richmond in order to maintain distance from
\nthe colony\u2019s royal Governor Dunmore and his administration in Williamsburg, was
\nthe second in a series of meetings of delegates and other civic leaders to
\ndebate the question of independence for Virginia and the colonies. Henry had
\nproposed that the colonists raise a militia that would exist separate from the
\nEnglish army and government, and some of the convention\u2019s more moderate
\nattendees had spoken out against that proposal as too belligerent and likely to
\nincrease the chances of war. <\/p>\n

Henry\u2019s speech
\nbecame famous, and a rallying cry for the incipient revolution, due to his
\nclosing line: \u201cI know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me
\nliberty or give me death!\u201d But what\u2019s particularly striking about the speech is
\nthat Henry frames his revolutionary sentiments through an initial lens not of liberty
\nbut of patriotism. He opens by making his disagreement with his fellow
\ndelegates about precisely that topic, his vision of patriotism in response to
\ntheirs: \u201cNo man thinks more highly than I do of the patriotism, as well as
\nabilities, of the very worthy gentlemen who have just addressed the House. But
\ndifferent men often see the same subject in different lights; and, therefore, I
\nhope it will not be thought disrespectful to those gentlemen if, entertaining
\nas I do, opinions of a character very opposite to theirs, I shall speak forth
\nmy sentiments freely, and without reserve.\u201d <\/p>\n

Moreover, Henry
\nmakes clear that he sees his responsibility to offer such sentiments as itself
\nan expression and exemplification of patriotism. \u201cShould I keep back my
\nopinions at such a time, through fear of giving offence,\u201d he admits, \u201cI should
\nconsider myself as guilty of treason towards my country.\u201d Given that Virginia
\n(like all the colonies) was still part of England at this time, and Henry thus
\na subject of King George like every other Virginian, he here reframes the
\ninterconnected concepts of patriotism and treason in a particularly bold and
\ncrucial way. That is, while he goes on to argue that freedom is \u201cthe glorious
\nobject of our contest,\u201d he frames the battle to attain that freedom, \u201cthe noble
\nstruggle in which we have been so long engaged\u201d and of which his own speech
\nbecomes a part, not just as an opposition to one nation, but also and
\nespecially as a patriotic embrace of another, new nation.<\/p>\n
